A family of seven, including three children, has made a dramatic escape from their burning home in Sydney’s south after a blaze broke out in the garage. Watch the video.

A family of seven, including three children, has managed to escape from their burning house in Sydney’s south after a fire broke out in the garage overnight.

Emergency services were called to the home on Penshurst St, Penshurst, early Tuesday morning after reports of a two-storey house fire.

A Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) spokesperson said the father discovered the blaze after their smoke alarm went off at 4.30am, and raced to wake up his family upstairs.

He attempted to fight the blaze with a garden hose, but the flames had already spread throughout the home.

Meanwhile, the grandfather became trapped by smoke while trying to wake up the sleeping children upstairs and was forced to smash a window while the father used a ladder to climb an awning to rescue the children.

Around 30 firefighters and eight trucks arrived on scene to find the house fully engulfed and a neighbouring property under threat.

As crews worked to extinguish the blaze, gas inside the house and collapsing solar panels on the roof made the situation more complex.

By the time the fire was extinguished, the house was completely destroyed.

The cause of the blaze is now under investigation, but firefighters noted several Lithium-ion batteries were charging in the garage at the time of the fire and this will form part of the investigation.

Firefighters said the blaze was a powerful reminder of the importance of working smoke alarms.

“Thanks to the early warning provided, seven lives were saved this morning,” a FRNSW spokesperson said.
