Nita Maynard: NRLW player fined over Northies assault

An NRLW player who lashed out at two security guards who tried to remove her from a famous Sydney pub has faced the music in court.

A heavily intoxicated NRLW player wound up in handcuffs after she bit a security guard on the arm at a Sydney pub and assaulted another as they tried to remove her from the venue.

North Sydney Bears hooker Nita Maynard, 28, was charged with two counts of common assault and failing to quit a licenced premises after the messy incident at Northies on April 2.

Two security guards tried to remove Maynard from the Cronulla pub around 9pm due to her level of intoxication but she refused.

“The accused was told again that she had to leave due to her intoxication and the accused said ‘test me’,” agreed police facts state.

Maynard continually attempted to re-enter the pub before the guards told her for third time she had to leave.

“The accused said ‘f*** you’ and with two hands pushed the first security guard in the chest,” agreed police facts state.

“The second security guard approached the accused and attempted to restrain her, and while doing this the accused bit his right arm.”

Maynard then started wildly swinging punches at the security guard before she was restrained and police attended the venue.

The capped NRLW player, who has also run out for the Sydney Roosters, the NSW Women’s State of Origin team and the New Zealand team, pleaded guilty to all three charges at Sutherland Local Court on May 13.

She was convicted of the two assaults and fined $1500 for biting the second security guard, $750 for pushing the first guard and $600 for failing to leave Northies.

She will appeal her convictions at Sydney District Court next month.

Maynard started as hooker for the Sydney Roosters NRLW team in their grand final losses to the Brisbane Broncos in 2018 and 2020.

She also represented New Zealand in the 2019 Rugby League World Cup 9s against Australia and the Maori All Stars in their win against the Indigenous All Stars in February this year.

The North Sydney Bears have been contacted for comment about her current status with the club.
