A man has been extradited from Queensland by homicide squad detectives after a man’s body was found in a metal cabinet in NSW’s Mid North Coast.

Officers attached to the Regional Enforcement Squad South established Strike Force Almug in May to investigate the alleged supply of drugs in the Caringbah area.

Officers engaged the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad to look into the disappearance of 22-year-old Darcy Schafer-Turner and established Strike Force Etruscan to investigate further.

Detectives conducted a search of Warrell Creek in Macksville on the mid-North Coast on May 21, where they recovered the body of Mr Schafer-Turner in a large metal cabinet.

Following further inquiries, Zachary Richard Fraser, 22, was arrested in May and charged with murder. He remains before the court.

Homicide detectives travelled to Brisbane on May 17 and arrested businessman Charles Dennis Le Marchant Turnbull, 33, on an outstanding warrant.

Homicide Squad Commander Acting Superintendent Virginia Gorman said Mr Schafer-Turner was killed at his Peakhurst home following an assault relating to a drug-related dispute.

“We will allege the man was murdered in a unit after being fairly violently assaulted and he may have suffocated,” Acting Supt Gorman said.

It is alleged Fraser called Turnbull, who travelled from Brisbane to Sydney to assist as “The Cleaner” to sanitise the murder scene and dispose of the body.

Police allege when Turnbull arrived in Sydney he went to Bunnings to purchase chlorine, coveralls, duct tape, gloves and cleaning materials.

It was alleged he then attended a Peakhurst unit, where Mr Schafer-Turner’s body was, was before making another trip to Bunnings, in the deceased’s ute, to buy a large metal cabinet, drill, zip ties and rolls of black plastic.

It was alleged in court that Turnbull then commenced cleaning the crime scene and wrapped Mr Schafer-Turner’s body in plastic and placed it in the metal cabinet which was then taken downstairs to the car park.

It’s alleged the metal cabinet was placed in the back of the deceased’s ute and covered with tarpaulin.

Homicide detectives travelled to Queensland where they applied for Turnbull’s extradition, which was granted in Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday.

Turnbull was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station, where the warrant was executed for the offences of accessory after the fact to murder, steal motor vehicle and improperly interfere with corpse.

Turnbull was refused bail to appear before Lismore Local Court today.
