A former members of the Greens faces two new child sex charges which police allege relate to vulnerable Filipino children.
Jonathon Peter Doig, formerly of Gymea now of Pyrmont, was arrested in June 2020 and initially faced charges of procuring a child for sexual activity outside Australia, using a carriage service to solicit child abuse material and possessing child abuse material.
The 58-year-old has since been charged with using a carriage service to transmit child abuse material to himself and offending against subsection 272.9(1) on two or more occasions.
This last charge refers to it being an offence for a person to engage in sexual activity (other than intercourse) with a child under 16 years of age outside Australia.
Doig’s lawyer, Ms McDougal, appeared on his behalf in Downing Centre Local Court before Magistrate Jennifer Atkinson on Tuesday (May 11) while the one time climate change warrior sat outside.
Magistrate Atkinson inquired how case conference negotiations were proceeding.
“Getting there,” Ms McDougal replied.
“A lot of progress has been made. We are asking for another four weeks (adjournment).”
Magistrate Atkinson granted the adjournment and Doig will next appear before the court on June 1 for a further mention.
Police have previously alleged in court Doig spent $129,224 in 180 separate transactions between October 2010 and May 2020 on child abuse material, some of which was live-streamed from the Philippines.
Doig had allegedly communicated with one victim up until the day before Australian Federal Police dramatically arrested him at his Gymea home, where he once lived with his family.
The Greens suspended Doig from the party after the charges were laid.
