A one-time pro boxer who rubs shoulders with some of rugby league’s most prominent names has been charged over an alleged stabbing in which a man was left unconscious in a Sydney street.
Ibrahim Srour, his brother Mustafa, and Tasi Sooalo have all been charged with robbery in company and affray over a shocking alleged incident in Rockdale on March 2.
Police will allege the trio robbed a man named Jawad Elzein of an iPhone and used unlawful violence toward him in such a way that would have caused fear to others.
The court heard Elzein had stab wounds but that the accused trio were also injured.
A police prosecutor conceded there could be negotiations about whether allegations specifically of a robbery would proceed in future.
Srour, 22, works in the construction industry and won his first ever professional boxing match.
The Turrella man has shared posts featuring former NRL player Willis Meehan and allegedly Alameddine-affiliated rapper Ay Huncho.
He is followed on social media by ex-NRL player Joey Leilua, boxing and NRL legend Anthony Mundine, and current NRL players Braydon Trindall, Payne Haas, David Fifita, Jayden Sua, Daniel Saifiti and Briton Nikora.
It is not suggested any of Srour’s followers have any association with the allegations against him whatsoever, or that Srour is affiliated with the Alameddine organised crime network.
Mustafa Srour was granted strict conditional bail during a bedside hearing at Sutherland Local Court last week as he was undergoing surgery for injuries incurred in the incident.
In court, Sydney silk Ian Lloyd told Magistrate Brett Thomas the trio would deny being armed with knives before the incident which left all four involved with various injuries.
The court viewed CCTV footage of the incident which concludes with Mr Elzein lying unconscious on the road outside his Rockdale convenience store.
“As two or three of the applicants approach, the complainant appears to get up, lift his shirt, and do something, and then the complainant appears to make movements towards those approaching him,” Mr Lloyd said.
“As the complainant appears to do something with his arm area, one of the accused appears to grab him by the arm, which is consistent with trying to stop the infliction of a knife wound.”
Mr Lloyd said the trio would allege an existing dispute with the complainant preceded the incident, involving “argy bargy on social media”.
Prosecutor James Pollett highlighted the moment the complainant is left unconscious on the road in his opposition to bail.
“It’s one thing to take him to the ground, it’s another thing to leave him there unconscious and get into a vehicle,” Sgt Pollett said.
“My learned friend neglected to mention the driving by, yelling out ‘f--king gronk’ prior to the incident – it wasn’t just a retaliation, there was some level of planning.”
Mr Thomas noted Srour and Sooalo’s lack of criminal record and their submission they had acted in self-defence before granting the pair bail on a $30,000 surety each.
Srour and Sooalo will both be required to report to police three times a week, surrender any valid passports, and not communicate with each other or Mustafa Srour.
The matters return to court for a brief status mention on April 30.
