Cronulla Northern Gateway development: pictures revealed in development application

A full-line supermarket, liquor store and more than 100 luxury apartments are slated for an old block of shops in Sydney’s south recently bought in a line for hundreds of millions of dollars.

A full-line supermarket and two luxury apartment buildings with a pool in between are part of the plans to completely transform an old block of shops and restaurants in Sydney’s south.

Cronulla’s so-called “Northern Gateway” site on the Kingsway opposite Cronulla Mall would be demolished and transformed into a new luxury commercial, retail and residential hub under plans submitted to Sutherland Shire Council last week.

The application submitted to the council, which will be determined by the Sydney South Planning Panel, includes a two-storey building with ground floor retail including a full-line supermarket, liquor store, specialist retail, first floor commercial space and six units.

Two seven-storey residential flat buildings behind the podium will include 106 units, along with a three-level basement car park with 298 spaces.

“The proposal has been developed to be sympathetic to the heritage buildings in the vicinity of the site and has been designed to minimise the impact of overshadowing on Cronulla Mall,” the applicants stated.

“The redevelopment of the site offers the opportunity to strengthen the existing Cronulla centre’s economic viability by increasing retail footfall not just for the development but the surrounding retail offerings, as well as employment opportunities.”

Sammut Developments – the Sutherland Shire development outfit behind the Banc building in the mall and the slated “Southern Gateway” development opposite Cronulla train station is behind the $53.7 million plans.

The old block – which was bought by Sammut for $300 million – currently includes the now-defunct Sting Bar and Nightclub, Guzman Y Gomez, Mr Liquor and a range of other food stores and services.
