Australia's Growing Drug Crisis

A glamorous gym owner has been caught driving high on ice after alarmed NSW Ambulance paramedics saw her Porsche speeding and swerving all over a major highway.

Cherie Mollica, 32, was caught driving under the influence for the second time in five years when paramedics saw her veering haphazardly across the Hume Hwy near Goulburn last year.

Just after 8am on May 28 last year paramedics called police when they saw Mollica’s black Porsche driving in a dangerous manner near Colo Vale.

“The informants stated the vehicle’s speed was inconsistent and varied between 80km/h and 120km/h, wandering between lanes and narrowly missing other motorists and guard rails,” agreed police facts stated.

“They described her as swerving between lanes and, at times, over the breakdown lane without indicating, as well as speeding up and slowing down dramatically for no apparent reason.”

When police intercepted Mollica and the paramedics at Marulan she told police she was attempting to drive from Sydney to Melbourne.

“She stated she had taken two Xanax the night before to help her sleep,” agreed police facts stated.

“During this conversation police noted the accused’s speech was slurred, her eyes were glazed with pinpoint and fixed pupils and she was unsteady on her feet to the point where police grabbed her arm to support her a number of times.”

A drug test at Goulburn Base Hospital showed Mollica was driving under the influence of ice and she subsequently pleaded guilty to the single charge at Sutherland Local Court on Thursday.

Magistrate Joy Boulos convicted her and sentenced her to an 18-month community corrections order with a seven-month driving disqualification and a $700 fine.

“She was a risk to a number of members of the community,” Ms Boulos said.

“I consider the facts objectively serious and this is against a criminal history of drug use.”

Solicitor Warwick Korn told the court Mollica had recently opened a gym with her parents’ assistance in Sans Souci.

“She deserves credit for getting herself into detox,” Mr Korn told the court.

It was the second time since 2016 Mollica had been caught driving under the influence after she was convicted of mid-range drink driving in December 2016.

The incident was also the latest development in Mollica’s well-documented struggle with drug addiction after she narrowly avoided full-time jail for supplying GBL in March 2016.

At Downing Centre Local Court Mollica was then sentenced to a two-year suspended jail term for supplying the drug along with two counts of prohibited drug possession.

Mollica has reinvented herself as a personal trainer and counts social media influencers and former Married At First Sight contestants Jessika Power and Stacey Hampton among her friends.
