Bexley man David Kassab jailed for threatening to send sex tape, possessing child abuse material

Police uncovered nearly 800 child abuse files during an investigation into a south Sydney man who threatened to expose a 17-year-old girl’s sex tape.

A delinquent threatened to send a teenage girl’s sex tape with him to her dad after a dispute regarding a broken Apple AirPod, a court has heard.

David Kassab, 26, appeared in Sutherland Local Court from custody on Monday where he was jailed for two years after pleading guilty to threatening to distribute an intimate image without consent and possessing child abuse material.

Documents tendered in court state the Bexley man started talking to the 17-year-old victim on Snapchat in early 2023 before they met up, exchanged numbers and became “friends with benefits”.

A few weeks later Kassab was at the victim’s home with an ice pipe. The documents state he blew smoke on the girl’s face and placed the pipe in her mouth which left her feeling drowsy.

The pair started talking via Snapchat.

The victim started performing oral sex on Kassab before noticing a flash of light.

“What are you doing,” she said.

Kassab told her he was recording and she responded: “No, no, no, I don’t want you to video it.”

The documents state Kassab said he would delete it, however, when asked whether he deleted it about a month later he said had not.

In April, last year, Kassab was arguing with the victim when she broke one of his sister’s AirPods after throwing it at him.

The girl apologised and said she would “pay for it”, but Kassab told her “don’t worry about it”.

Documents state a week later Kassab began repeatedly contacting the girl, demanding she pay for the AirPod and accusing her of sleeping with a mutual friend.

“I’m calling your dad,” he said.

“His (sic) gonna hear ur recording... the video of you sucking me off and shit... U want ur dad to see that.

“Karma sucks so u got an hour to tell [the mutual friend] to come up with the money or everyone and ur dads seeing the real u.”

Minutes later the victim received a cropped image of the sex tape before she replied: “F--k off.”

“Gladly when I get my money,” Kassab said.

The victim reported Kassab who was arrested and taken to St George police station for questioning.

“I’m going against my own lawyer’s advice because I know I’m not in the wrong,” he told police.

He also said he “wasn’t actually” going to send the video to the girl’s dad.

During a data download of Kassab’s iPhone, investigators found nearly 800 items of child abuse material including videos of children as young as eight being forced into sexual acts with adults.

In court on Monday, Magistrate Hugh Donnelly said it was “reprehensible” to possess child abuse material, but noted the sentencing assessment report outlining he had it to “defraud people for financial gain” and not due to a sexual interest in children.

Mr Donnelly said Kassab was on community correction orders for intimidation, drug driving and breaching two apprehended violence orders when he committed the latest offending.

With time already served, Kassab will be released on parole in November, 2025.
