A young car spray painter in a high-performance luxury vehicle has apologised after he was caught driving at an eye-watering speed in a notorious hoon hot spot in Sydney.

NSW police crack down on dangerous driving

A Sydney man ripped through a notorious hooning hot spot at more than twice the legal speed limit while he was behind the wheel of a flashy high-performance luxury vehicle.

St George Highway Patrol officers were patrolling the known hoon track south of the Airport Tunnel on August 6 when they caught Bailee McGuire, 21, speeding down General Holmes Dr.

The car spray painter by trade was clocked at a whopping 147km/h in the 70km/h zone – more than twice the legal limit for the notorious strip.

The heavily tattooed southern Sydney man appeared at Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to driving at a dangerous speed in his BMW high-performance vehicle.

His lawyer Mr Wilkins told the court McGuire – who has only ever been fined once for not using P plates on a work vehicle – had apologised for his actions.

“It’s a ridiculous vehicle and I’ve told him to sell it,” Mr Wilkins told the court.

“It’s some sort of competition vehicle and he saved $25,000 to purchase it.”

Magistrate Philip Stewart convicted McGuire, fined him $900 and disqualified him from driving for 12 months backdated to the day he was charged and police suspended his licence.

“There’s no doubt this young man is a good person but these matters affect both good and bad people,” Mr Stewart said.

“People who are old enough to be licensed are assumed to be mature enough to comply with road rules and traffic laws – there must be action for driving at such a speed.”

Far from his glorious days behind the wheel of a BMW, McGuire is now riding a pushbike to his workplace.
