Adam Ayshan: Roselands man jailed for role in drug importation

A Sydney tradie grabbed his father and wept after being handed his punishment for his part in an ice importation job from California.

Australia's Growing Drug Crisis

A cash-strapped plumber became embroiled in an international drug importation with the expectation of receiving a measly reward of $1000.

However, the 23-year-old man instead has received a prison sentence of almost five years.

Adam Ayshan, was tasked to be the collector of an importation of ‘ice’ from California, USA with 4.2kg of the pure drug hidden inside 14 food ration packages arriving in Sydney last May via the postal service.

The court heard the Roselands man had shared his family’s financial woes with a neighbour which led to his involvement in the international drug importation.

In the weeks around the importation Ayshan was in frequent social media communication with two Arncliffe women, one who the package was personally addressed to and the other whose address the package was to arrive at.

When the drugs landed, one of the women personally couriered the package to Ayshan’s home and together they inspected the goods with the conversation secretly recorded by police.

“Open it, might as well, open it,” the woman said. The court heard Ayshan opened the box, referenced the tomato paste and portellini inside and shared his surprise about the weight of the package.

“I just want to know what is so heavy that’s in there … since when is tomato paste so heavy” he said.

Soon after Ayshan’s neighbour arrived at his home and the pair were arrested by police transporting the drugs in the back of a ute.

Judge Tanya Smith accepted the 23-year-old was caught off guard by the amount of drugs involved, expecting about 1.7kg in total or five ounces per ration pack.

“There is a need to discourage others who may be targeted by the prospect of easy money,” she said.

The Roselands man, who the court heard had plans to propose to his girlfriend, crumpled to his knees, clutched onto his father and sobbed as he realised he would be spending the next 30 months behind bars.

Ayshan was convicted of attempting to possess an unlawfully imported border-controlled substance and sentenced to four years ten months jail, with a non-parole period of two and a half years. He will be eligible for parole in November 2023.
