In the dying seconds of injury time in the Battlewin Premier League grand final against Woongarrah, Killarney District coach Chris Ackerley thought his side was gone.
“We were 2-1 down and I’d started packing the chairs away,” Ackerley confessed.
“It was five minutes into injury time and I thought that’s it.”
But his players had other ideas, with Daniel Moffett sending the game into extra time with a screamer.
Killarney scored in the eighth minute of the first period of extra time and held on to finish with a 3-2 win in Saturday evening’s match at Pluim Park.
The comeback was another devastating result for Woongarrah, with the Premier League newcomers losing the league championship in the dying seconds to Killarney just weeks earlier.
Woongarrah coach Luke Rogers — the BPL coach of the year — struggled for words to describe the match.
“What can you say — they played right to the whistle,” he said.
He said the narrow loss had made his players more determined to get stuck back in next year.
It was Killarney’s fourth straight top grade grand final win, in addition to their four consecutive league championship.
Ackerley sympathised with Woongarrah.
“You’ve got to feel for Woongarrah — it must be a devastating feeling,” he said.
Killarney goalkeeper Declan Drake took out the man of the match honours.
Meanwhile, Southern & Ettalong United took out the reserve grade title and Killarney won the under-21 title.
