THE MATCHES
BRONZE MEDAL MEN: BALMAIN v UNSW WESTS RESULT
Charlie Negus starred in the first half as UNSW Wests rose to a 15-10 win against Balmain Tigers in the KAP7 Cup bronze medal bout.
Wests led 7-2 at halftime and 8-2 just after the break before a spirited Balmain rallied.
Indeed the Tigers got the score back to within three points of their rivals into the final quarter, but Wests’ first half effort had laid foundations for the win.
Even with the game seemingly lost, Balmain scored late through Jordan Kremers-Taylor and Mitchell Poot, but the best side was in front.
Negus, Aussie Sharks Locky Hollis (four goals) and Andrew Ford (three goals) were focal points for Wests, with Negus scoring on three occasions in an excellent team performance from Wests.
The Tigers reduced the lead to 5-2 nearing halftime when Daniel Monk found the back of the net, but late second quarter goals from Negus and Lachlan Hollis gave UNSW Wests a down payment on victory.
Then, just after the halftime break, Ford added his second goal and the score was 8-2.
UNSW Captain and Dual Olympian Joel Dennerley said it took a full team effort to get across the line.
“Nice to finish the season with a win, disappointing we weren’t in the gold medal match today but the boys have played well these last couple of days and we’re happy with the water polo we put together,” Dennerley said.
“The games this weekend have been really competitive, every team has put their best foot forward.
“We’re lucky at Wests that we’ve got a lot of depth in our team, Locky (Hollis), Andy (Ford) and Tim (Putt) really stepped up this weekend, and even some of our
Earlier, both teams were a little impatient early, but by mid way through the first quarter had settled.
Balmain had the better of the match early and it was reflected when Harry Sanderson scored to make it 1-nil.
Excellent goalkeeping by Balmain’s James Clark three times repelled UNSW Wests before Wests’ Andrew Ford broke through for his side.
Then Negus, having earlier hit the posts, beat Clark’s outstretched arm to lift his side to 2-1.
UNSW Wests’ goalkeeper Joel Dennerley then saved a penalty on the cusp of the first break.
BRONZE MEDAL WOMEN: CRONULLA v DRUMMOYNE RESULT
A fast finishing effort by Cronulla lifted the Sharks marginally above a gallant Drummoyne 12-7 in the women’s bronze medal clash.
Drummoyne pushed hard for a second upset win over the Sharks in as many days, but three successive goals from Lena Mihailovic, Any Ridge and Maddy Steere took Cronulla from a 6-5 advantage to a 9-6 lead in the fourth quarter.
“We’re all playing together for the first time, but built in to our strengths over the weekend and glad we managed to come away with the win today,” Ridge said.
“Our fitness is what got us over the line today, which is really positive for us. Towards the end we managed to pull away from them and I think that really is a credit to our experience.
“It’s always fun to play club games and put our training into practice,” she said.
It was a ripping game, with scores locked at 3-all at quarter time and then 4-3 in Drummoyne’s favour at halftime.
Bronte Halligan and a backhanded effort by Pinky Rewi-Henry then elevated Sharks to 6-4 into the third quarter before Morgan Baxter scored one of the goals of the match for Drummoyne following a cross cage effort.
But into the fourth quarter and the Cronulla players asserted themselves, with Ridge launching a scorching, bouncing effort from a long way out.
During the second half Queenslander Gabi Palm, a guest player for Cronulla, also did well to restrict Drummoyne to just two second half goals with her goal keeping.
Palm’s effort was part of an elite goal keeping effort after Sharks first half keeper Lea Yanitsas had also shone.
Earlier, Drummoyne opened the clash with a pair of goals by Morgan Baxter before Cronulla’s Maddy Steere got one past the goalie after a pass by Bronte Halligan.
Brooke McClean then drove home a shot from the outside, beating the keeper in the top corner.
It was a sweet moment for McClean who had switched from Cronulla to Drummoyne this season.
Halligan then scored her own goal for Cronulla and the action-packed encounter was thrilling onlookers.
GOLD MEDAL WOMEN: BALMAIN TIGERS v SYDNEY UNI LIONS RESULT
A powerhouse third quarter performance from Sydney Uni laid foundations for a 12-8 gold medal winning effort over Balmain.
Sydney Uni turned a 6-4 advantage into a five goal break before Tigers’ Maddy Schmid nailed the opening goal of the final term for Balmain.
Balmain got the score back to 7-11, but when Keesie Goffers converted a penalty shot four minutes from time, the game was almost won.
Daniella Rosentha snared a hat trick of goals while Goffers scored two magnificent second half goals for Sydney Uni en route to the victory.
The quality of the Balmain side meant the game was never safe for Sydney Uni, but 9-4 is a big lead in a grand final.
Uni captain Keesja Gofers said she is proud of her entire team for working together to get the win.
“So proud of the Lions for winning the KAP7 Cup, we couldn’t be happier with how we played today,” Gofers said.
“We had some really strong attacks, and I think our defence is what made the difference for us, we were so strong in our defence.
“It was such a team effort and that’s why it’s such an amazing feeling - it wasn’t just one or two of us, it was the entire team and that’s what makes it that little bit sweeter,” she said.
Both teams hit the ground running, with Sydney Uni Lions inching to a 3-2 first quarter advantage.
Balmain had opened the scoring courtesy of a penalty shot from Queensland’s Alice Williams, who was on loan to the Tigers.
But back Sydney Uni came, with Tilly Kearns super impressive and Danielle Rosentha scoring before Balmain had the last score courtesy of Tayla Walsh.
GOLD MEDAL MEN: DRUMMOYNE v SYDNEY UNI RESULT
Sydney Uni’s Chaz Poot scored a sensational last quarter hat-trick of goals to carry his side to a 14-11 gold medal match win against Drummoyne Devils this afternoon.
In a fiery finale, Poot dragged his side from a 9-7 deficit during the third quarter, to win.
Poot scored late in the third quarter and then three in a row in the final quarter.
In such a tight match, his finishing skills were welcomed by teammates who were dragged into a dramatic gold medal game stoush by the Devils.
TOKYO OLYMPIC HOPEFULS PLAY IN SYDNEY CUP
The game was still in the balance with one minute to play when Luke Pavillard directed home the winning goal from a penalty.
He then added another with 10 seconds to play. Nick Brooks did everything possible for Drummoyne with a hat-trick of second half goals, but it was not enough.
Winning captain George Ford said it was one of the closest games he had been involved in all year.
“That was a tough game, the lead changed I don’t know how many times, full credit to Drummoyne they played awesome,” Ford said.
“It was very physical, very tough, there was a lot of passion in the water - it was a fantastic game to be a part of.
“It could have gone either way but we just stuck to our processes, had faith in each other and that seemed to pull through in the end,” he said.
Earlier, Drummoyne had scored four successive goals to go from a two goal deficit in the third quarter, to lead by two (9-7) before Sydney Uni’s Chaz Poot snapped their momentum with a goal on the cusp of the break.
For the Devils Nick Brooks twice scored in this period, followed in quick succession by Sam Slobodien and Blake Edwards.
Way back in the first quarter, Edwards had opened the scoring and away the match went, with one team scoring, and then the other.
Nick Hallam found the back of the net three times in the 5-all halftime scoreline in what was a scintillating exhibition.
Not to be out done, his teammate AJ Roach powered home a winner with such force, it was surprising the ball did not burst through the net after the goalie had missed defending the blitz shot.
