Replay: Queensland White v NSW Metro Sky (U16 grand final) - Football Australia Boys National Youth Championships Day 6

The Football Australia National Youth Championships produced some incredible football during the boys’ tournament in Wollongong.

Over 700 players and officials took part during the week-long tournament, with Victoria Blue claiming the U15 title for the second consecutive year and NSW Metro Sky securing the U16 championship.

A combined total of 331 goals were scored across both age divisions, and we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 best goals from Wollongong.

Isaac Cookson, Chimdi Nwogwugwu and Sam Stanway, Queensland White U16

Queensland White were one of the surprises of the tournament, going on a fairytale run to the U16 grand final. Going 2-0 down to Northern NSW in the semi-final, the Queensland boys pulled off one of the greatest comebacks to steal a 3-2 victory and book a spot in the grand final. Sam Stanway and Chimdi Nwogwugwu levelled the scoring before Isaac Cookson produced a stunning strike with minutes to go.

Amlani Tatu, South Australia U16

Amlani Tatu from South Australia scores a goal

Amlani Tatu is already being hailed as a generational talent and was incredible to watch at the NYC. Tatu only scored two goals at the championships, one of which was an impressive individual goal against Victoria White to help South Australia claim seventh place. The 16-year-old was named as the Player of the Tournament for his efforts and is already a regular feature for the U17 Joeys teams.

Happy Venables, Northern NSW U16

Northern NSW heartbreakingly missed out on the U16 grand final, but put on a good performance over Victoria Blue to finish third at the championships. The team got off to a blistering start with a 4-0 win over NSW Country, with Harry Venables contributing two incredible long-range shots. Like many of the Northern NSW team, Venables currently represents the Newcastle Jets in their youth academy.

Ewan Gasowski, NSW Metro Sky U16

Despite getting off to a less-than-ideal start, NSW Metro Sky ended up going all the way to claim the U16 national title. The grand final against Queensland White was a tense 2-1 win, but it got off to the best possible start thanks to Wanderers Academy product Ewan Gasowski. The 16-year-old capitalised off a great pass in from Max Anastasio to send his strike over the goalie and into the back of the net.

Samuel Stanway, Queensland White U16

Sam Stanway scored two goals at the NYC for Queensland White, and both have made this list. The Lions FC striker was an integral part of the team’s success and his first goal showcased his incredible footwork and individual skill. Stanway was also recently selected as part of the Joeys’ Pacific tour squad.

Mush Sawiz, Victoria Blue U15

Mush Sawiz from Victoria Blue U15 converts a brilliant strike against Victoria White

Victoria Blue had no shortage of exciting young talent and Melbourne Victory academy product Mush Sawiz proved the point in the team’s semi-final win over Victoria White. Sawiz produced a brilliant strike from outside the box to open the scoring against their local rivals, while a second half brace from Becvinovski secured the victory.

Orlando Chrysis, Victoria White U15

Victorian Orlando Chrysis seems to only score bangers. The 15-year-old was a scoring machine for Victoria White as they narrowly missed out on a medal position to finish the competition in fourth. This was evident in his incredible against Queensland Silver, where Chrysis scored all four goals in the 4-0 win.

Luke Becvinovski, Victoria Blue U15

Luke Becvinovski was one of the stars of the U15 tournament, scoring 11 goals in six matches including a stunning four goal haul in the opening match. Being the son of the all-time highest goalscorer in Victorian football, Sash Becvinovski, Luke was always going to be one to watch. The 15-year-old is part of the Melbourne City academy and aims to one day beat his father’s record.

Chris Irakoze, South Australia U15

Chris Irakoze’s impressive 10-goal tournament haul was only rivalled by Luke Becvinovski, but Irakoze went home with the even greater honour of Player of the Tournament. The 15-year-old was the talk of the competition with his spectacular goal celebrations, with his roundoff backflip against NSW Metro Navy one of the best. Irakoze has since gone on to be selected as part of the U19 Pacific Aus football tour.

Cristiano Farfan and Christian Pullella, Western Australia U16

Cristiano Farfan from Western Australia scores late winner after mazing run from Christian Pullella in the 2024 National Youth Championships.

Although Cristiano Farfan has the goal against his name, it wouldn’t be right to exclude Christian Pullella from this list. Pullella expertly set up the goal for Farfan during the 5-2 loss to Victoria Silver, with the West Australian team celebrating the point accordingly. WA just missed out on a spot in the quarterfinals, but plenty of emerging Perth Glory Academy stars were on display during their run.

Thomas Blazevski and Leo Donald, Capital Football U16

Although Capital Football failed to make it out of their group, their opening match against Queensland Maroon turned out to be a six-goal thriller. Two of Capital Football’s three total goals came in the span of three minutes, featuring two worldies from Thomas Blazevski and Leo Donald. Blazevski netted a brilliant header off a solid corner delivery, while Donald backed that up a few minutes later with a stunning strike to double their lead.
