Sydney Scorpions sweep U14s division to claim dual titles at NYC touch on Sunshine Coast

A strong contingent of New South Wales teams made its way to the Sunshine Coast, and they returned with three titles, including the Sydney Scorpions who swept an age division.

THE National Youth Championships are in the books for another year, and New South Wales teams came away with an impressive haul.

Of the eight divisions contested on the Sunshine Coast, three titles returned south of the border, with the Sydney Scorpions claiming two.

The Scorpions had a mortgage on the U14s division, winning both the boys and girls titles at the weekend.

Meeting the South Queensland Sharks in both fixtures, the boys were able to maintain their composure best through the momentum swings to claim a 7-5 victory.

The girls on the other hand found themselves on the back foot for much of the contest, however they were able to hold solid, taking the lead in the final minutes and holding on to score 5-4.

Scorpions regional director Anthony Dudeck said it was a proud moment for the club, and is one they’re looking to build on.

“To win two out of six, we’re pretty happy with that,” he said.

“There’s a lot of rugby league players that have started in touch. As a region we need to make it as attractive as possible for players to compete in the NSWTA Junior Regionals and NYC. This will allow us to have our strongest teams compete at the NYC going forward.”

With a pair of contrasting games, Dudeck praised the way the two sides were able to hold their nerve in the grand finals.

“It’s amazing the level of skill, agility and speed in the U14s now,” he said.

“The boys was a high quality game. Scorpions probably looked the better team for the majority of the game, however with two 20 minute halves, momentum can change a number of times. Full credit to Craig Lowe and his coaching staff as they did well to hold onto the momentum for major parts of the game.

“The girls was the opposite with the Sharks on top for about 75 per cent of the game. However the Scorpions team were able to hang in and get it back to 4-all, before scoring the winning try with a couple of minutes to go. Well done to head coaches Gloria Berryman and Kalani Duff-Berryman, as this team has won 17 games undefeated during the 2022 NSWTA Junior Regional and NYC events.”

Dudeck hopes the success will keep players within the system as they increase in age.

“We need to make it as attractive as possible for the athletes to participate again in future events, including NYC 2023” he said.

“There’s now more than ever the lure of other sports and increased opportunities and programs in league and union.”

The other NSW victory came in the U12 boys, with the Hunter Western Hornets downing the Southern Rebels 6-4.
