They are players who didn’t make the Aussie team now keen up to show their wares at the World schools sevens rugby event.

And this youngster says there is plenty of fire in their belly.

Teen rugby gun Kai Roberts has set himself numerous goals in the game in 2023, including a colts title with Sydney University and cracking the NSW Waratahs Under 19 squad.

But before this year is out he is hoping he and Cavalier Barbarians teammates will also be making a mark on the international stage.

Roberts, from Connell’s Point, is part of a Barbarian side competing at the world school sevens rugby tournament in Auckland on Saturday and Sunday after a series of international matches against teams including Canada and Wales.

“We will be fired up,’’ he said.

“We all have a point to prove and that will bring out the best in us.

“But the same time there’s less pressure, we are a bit free and we have nothing to lose.

“This is a another way to show our faces and determination.

“It’s important to put your hand in the air for all of us.’’

Roberts plays for Sydney Uni Colts and is studying a Bachelor of Arts while working in a construction company as a labourer.

“My goal is to end up with the Waratahs or with a pro contract overseas,” he said.
