There were numerous draws, cliffhangers, thrillers and match results that defied the odds as the campaigns of NSW junior rugby players reached a climax.
After a sensational weekend of action, we revisit some of the great moments and stars of the show.
Sydney Juniors Rugby Union general manager Ben Gregory said one of the most astounding results of the grand finals played on the weekend was the number of drawn games.
“Of the 46 grand finals played in boys and six girls games 15 per cent were draws,’’ he said.
“That was seven draws in boys games. That’s incredible and shows how close these competitions are.’’
The SJRU season deciders didn’t disappoint with some of the best matches of the year played on the weekend.
An interesting result was Penrith RSL creating a little history in their grand final against the Western Raptors in the under 12s.
Penrith won the match 7-5 - the first time a Penrith RSL team has beaten the rival club in the age group.
Penrith president Adam Bullivant said the youngsters showed rapid improvement during the season.
“Last year we played division C and this year started in B and got pushed up to A,’’ he said.
“We hadn’t beaten the Raptors all year so this was great.
“We were one try each with the difference a conversion.’’
Bullivant said the Penrith side which won the state titles earlier this year was a combination of both clubs.
“We are a club just trying to do our best in western Sydney and show we can compete with the big clubs from the north and east,’’ he said.
The Blacktown Scorpions club were also celebrating,
Despite being a year younger than their opponents, the Scorpions team, all under 13 players, won the 14s grands final under the watchful eye of coached Mat Toaloa and manager Faasala Siofele
“It was such a great team effort for them,’’ said Scorpions president Desley Potoi.
“We had three make the grands final and this one win.
“And they deserved it., We had three season-ending injuries along the way as well.’’
It was a thriller in the under 15s girls 7s grand final between Mosman and Wests.
Mosman were trailing Wests 10-7 with less than a minute to go when Juliette Bailey scored with the last play of the game to secure the win.
Charlotte Sparks converted to help Mosman to their 14-10 victory after being down 10-0 at halftime.
In the Collaroy Cougars v Western Raptors match in the under 10s the Cougars were down 14-19 as the clock wound down.
Then a cross field kick to an open player saw them score a late try which levelled the score with the conversion on the bell delivering the Collaroy side the win.
