Junior rugby rep spots are on the line in a series of trial matches this week but Sydney Juniors won’t be busting out any fancy moves. They have another plan

Coach James Barkell said his team will concentrate on doing the basics right and keeping things simple.

“We won’t have a heap of fancy moves,’’ said Barkell, whose team played a GPS side on Tuesday and match-up against the Combined Catholic Colleges side in Friday’s big day out at Eric Tweedale.

“We are keeping it simple and executing the basic areas of the game.’’

Barkell expects two areas of strength in the Sydney Juniors side to be its kicking game and forward pack.

“Wihan Kruger (Southern Districts) has a very good kick in game and plays a very good tactical game,’’ Barkell said.

“He is a good talent.

“We are also strong in our forward pack. That will get us toe-to-toe with the other sides.’’

Barkell, being assisted by Greg Lee, said Sydney will also look to their locks to impress.

“Lachlan Doheny and Aden Ekanayake are very good,’’ he said.

“Lachlan is a big body and good in contact, carrying the ball and the set piece.

“Aden is very dynamic, fast. He offers something very different.

“He can be a dangerous ball runner in space.”

Barkell said Sydney’s opposition on Friday are unknown.

“We are playing CCS. We haven’t seen much of their games but they’ve played CAS and AICES so will have a bit of cohesion,’’ he said.

“Like any team they turn up on the day and can be strong.

“Every team will have a player with X-factor. It’s about us executing our roles and core skills.’’
