Subbies: the top players, teams in 2021 Suburban rugby first grade divisions, colts

The Subbies rugby comp was cut short by a global pandemic. We reveal the players leading the best and fairest awards chase and try scoring tally when the 2021 season ended.

Widespread Covid -19 restrictions forced the cancellation of rugby union in NSW until 2022, putting a stop to the famous Subbies competition in Sydney.

The board of the NSW Suburban Rugby Union made the decision that no premierships, championship, club championships or individual awards would be presented this year.

So we have decided to take a look at which teams and footballers were looking the goods in each first grade division before the Sydney Rugby Union Subbies comp was cancelled.

We also reveal the players leading the chase for the top awards and top try scorers overall.

SUBBIES RUGBY DIVISION ONE - KENTWELL CUP

Before the comp was canned for the first time since 1945, one team stood out in this division.

Woollahra Colleagues were undefeated when the Subbies season ended prematurely.

Colleagues opened the season with eight straight, marking them as the team to best in 2021.

The Drummoyne Dirty Reds were second on the ladder at the time, with six wins and two losses.

Mosman Whales were third with five wins and three losses, followed by Waverley, with the same win/loss record.

Tom Evans, from Petersham, was the top pick in the best and fairest ref count.

Ben Hooper from Colleagues was also turning plenty of heads.

Campbell Clifford was the top try scorer with nine, followed by Jack Redden, Simon Tavita, Jack Murphy, Matt Psaltis, Isikeli Laqekoro and Asipeti Latu all with six tries.

Steven Morton from the Hunters Hill club had an outstanding season.

SUBBIES RUGBY DIVISION TWO - BARRACLOUGH CUP

St Patrick’s Old Boys were the standouts in division two when the season was halted.

The club boasted a 7-1 win/loss record, with Hunters Hill second with six wins and two losses.

Uni of NSW was third on the ladder with five wins and three losses, with Newport next and boasting four wins, one daw and three losses.

Steven Morton from the Hunters Hill club was the standout player of this competition.

Lachlan Camroux and Will Ng-Fawcett were the top try scorers with six tries each.

Bailey Bugg, Afonso Firmo, Latu Havea and Joshua Camroux all scored five tries each.

Hawkesbury’s tight head prop Brendan Crosilla was a standout in his division..

SUBBIES RUGBY DIVISION THREE - CLARK CUP

Hawkesbury Valley were the stars of this Subbies competition when the curtain fell on it.

The club boasted a 7-2 record to be ahead of Briars (6-3) on the points ladder.

Western Raptors (6-3) and Old Ignations (4-4) were in third and fourth place.

Leading the best and fairest race was Hawkesbury’s tight head prop Brendan Crosilla.

Zach Fortini and Ulithi Uilou scored big in this division with 11 tries each.

Reece Lipowicz and Max Fiorni scored seven each and Lachlan Koziollek and Adam Packer scored six tries apiece.

SUBBIES RUGBY DIVISION FOUR - MCLEAN CUP

The Sydney Harbour Oysters - in only their second year - were the most inform team in this comp.

The club boasted seven wins and just one loss when the competition was called off.

Redfield Old Boys were second (6-2), with the Manly Savers (5-3) and Northern Saints (5-3) next.

The Manly Savers have been a one team in Subbies for years but fielded a number of sides in 2021.

Angus McClelland, the Oysters No. 8, was leading the best and fairest when the comp was shut down.

Fatu Lafaele scored 10 tries in the season that was with Carlos Tempone nailing nine.

Nicholas Stubbs scored seven, while Joseph Wall, Samaka, Isaacs, Lachlan Argiris, Matt Hayter, Mack Bowman and Iverson Toleafoa all scored six.

SUBBIES RUGBY DIVISION FIVE - JEFFREY CUP

This was an engrossing competition with three clubs all with the same win/loss record when the season was stopped by coronavirus restrictions.

Maryland sat on top of the ladder with seven wins and two losses.

Menai was second, followed by Sydney Irish.

North Cronulla were third with a six wins and three losses record.

A club not in the top four - Burraneer - had the player leading the best and fairest race in second rower Liam Ryan.

Baden Sullivan was the top try scorer with nine in this competition.

Emanuel Siaosi scored eight, Josefa Naira Manoa, John Segi, Dylan Rumsey, Chris Charlton, Will Rudkin and Jeke Moses all scored seven.

SUBBIES RUGBY DIVISION SIX - MELDRUM CUP

Another close competition, with Brothers leading Wakehurst when the competition was stopped.

Both clubs boasted a 7-2 win/loss record.

Kings Old Boys had four wins, a draw and four losses while Lane Cove ended with three wins, a draw and five losses.

Seb Kebby from Lane Cove was leading the best and fairest race when the season was halted.

Harrison Wright scored a whopping 18 tries in the Meldrum Cup to be another standout.

Robert Dickinson went over for 15, Josh McCarthy for 12 and Resmine Sionemale, Brendan Davies, Michael Parker and Aaron Stern all scored six tries.

SUBBIES COLTS DIVISION ONE - BARBOUR CUP

Mosman were one of the few undefeated sides in Subbies when the season was called off.

Mosman, boasting a 8-0 record, were followed by Waverly (6-2), Forest (5-3) and Woollahra Colleagues (5-3)

James Harding, the captain from Mosman, was the comps leading player when it was abandoned.

COLTS DIVISION TWO - ROBERTSON CUP

Hunters Hill was another club with an unblemished record when the season was stopped.

Hunters Hill had won all of their eight games. with Newport second on the ladder and boasting a 6-2 record.

St Patrick’s had also won six of their eight matches, with Lindfield fourth with a 4-4 win/loss record.

Inside centre Bailey Bugg from Hunters Hill was a player turning plenty of heads.

COLTS DIVISION THREE - NICHOLSON CUP

Another team was undefeated in this competition in Beecroft who won eight straight games.

Old Ignations were sitting in second place with just one loss from their eight matches.

Eastern Suburbs were next with a 6-2 record, followed by Briars (3-5)

Flanker Edward Thompson from Old Ignations was the standout.

COLTS DIVISION FOUR - RADFORD CUP

The Manly Savers were due to have played in the grand final against Mosman when this competition was shut down.

Manly had won six of their sevens games, as had Mosman.

Chatswood and Woollahra Colleagues both won four of their seven games.

Rob Grant from the Manly Savers was the standout player in this comp when it was cut short.
