An intriguing round 10 of the Souths Juniors competition saw two big names turn out for their first games, a contender make a huge statement and the defending premiers drop out.
Here’s how the weekend played out:
COOGEE DOLPHINS 6-16 SOUTH EASTERN
Boosted with the additions of George Burgess and Jackson Garlick, the South Eastern Seagulls claimed their biggest scalp of the season with a 16-6 defeat of the Dolphins at Kensington Oval.
The first 20 minutes was a slog for both teams, before the Seagulls were able to strike twice in a matter of five minutes to open the game up.
It started with Rylan Barnes before Cooper Stevens helped the visitors to a 12-0 lead at the break.
When winger Barnes had his second South Eastern was well in control, before Joshua Rudolph finally got the Dolphins on the board 20 minutes from time to give them some hope of a late comeback.
That would be all they could muster as the Seagulls held on to solidify fifth spot on the ladder.
COOGEE WOMBATS 10-32 ALEXANDRIA
The Rovers recovered from their first loss of the season in emphatic style, downing the Wombats 32-10 at Marcellin Fields.
Just a week after Matraville was able to narrowly lower their colours for the first time this season, Alexandria shot out of the blocks to open up a big lead on the home side.
The Wombats fought their way back to 22-10 down with tries to Eden Potter and Sam Graziani, but an error from the ensuing set was punished by the Rovers and from that point it was game over.
MATRAVILLE 10-8 MASCOT
Matraville climbed up to second on the standings after grinding out a 10-8 win over Mascot at Coogee Oval.
Conditions made things tough for both sides with the muddy surface nullifying the attacking weapons of both teams.
MARRICKVILLE DEF REDFERN
For the second-straight week the Redfern All Blacks forfeited their fixture.
It means the defending premiers have now dropped out of the competition and will take no further part going forward.
It serves as Marrickville’s first success of the season as they look to mount a late-season charge to work their way into the top five.
