Incredible field goal steals victory in semi-final

RUGBY LEAGUE: We’re just days away from one of the most intriguing Souths Juniors A-grade grand finals in recent years.

South Eastern and Matraville both have their maiden first grade title within their sights in what is likely to be a packed house at the spiritual home of footy in the region, Redfern Oval.

Before Sunday’s huge encounter, NewsLocal caught up with Jordan Trindall, host of the Tricksta The Barista Podcast, to get his thoughts on the eight most dangerous players to watch in this weekend’s grand final.

SOUTH EASTERN SEAGULLS

4. KELL O’BRIEN

The Seagulls skipper will line up at lock, providing the inspiration for his team when they need it the most.

“Came back from playing NSW Cup last year for Wentworthville,” Trindall said.

“Fires everyone up. Even when he’s injured he’s there at training leading the side. He just wants to win.”

3. KY BOURIS

A classy dummy half who comes into Sunday’s final with some good form under his belt.

“A lethal dummy half that tears shreds off them,” Trindall said.

“He scored a double last time they played. If he carries on that form he’s a massive chance for man of the match. Very good out of dummy half.”

2. EMMANUEL KANDIDAKIS

Came to South Eastern from the Rabbitohs system and hasn’t taken a backwards step.

“Plays in the centres and is big. A freak of a talent,” Trindall said.

“Played SG Ball for Souths this year and got promoted to the U21s. Now has come back and loving it.

“Had a blinder of a year and he’s a big danger man.”

1. KURTIS PREECE

Carries the load at halfback for the undefeated minor premiers at halfback, and is up to the task in the biggest game.

“Their Nathan Cleary. He steers the whole ship,” Trindall said.

“Matraville will target him. They know how good he is and will try to put him off his game. But he gives it back and will try to do the same.

“He dictates a lot of their game. If he has a good game, he’s definitely their number one.”

4. BLAKE JUDD

The skipper of the Matraville Tigers brings a wealth of experience at higher levels of play.

“Came over from Mascot and has played with South Sydney in a Charity Shield,” Trindall said.

“He’s playing well. He’s really leading the forward pack and scored a try (at the weekend) so he’ll be looking to continue that form.”

3. KAREEL PHILLIPS

He’s had a lot of success in the Souths Juniors comp, and brings an incredible feat into this weekend’s game.

“He’s got a massive step on him, a good show and go and is undefeated here,” Trindall said.

“Kareel’s had five grand finals at Redfern Oval and never lost one, and won the Koori Knockout as well.”

2. NICK MOUGIOUS

The X-factor for the Tigers and someone that is capable of turning a game on it’s head if he fires.

“He’s an animal. A massive centre that is really strong and lethal,” Trindall said.

“If you give him early ball he’s certain to cross for a try. Scored a double against the Dolphins in the first semi final.

“Any early ball and they need three or four defenders to get to him.”

1. JADE ANDERSON

One of the most brilliant players in the competition, the star fullback is Matraville’s key weapon to finally turning the tables on South Eastern.

“An absolute freak of a player. Is so dangerous with the ball,” Trindall said.

“He passes a lot, but once he gets through he’s an animal. Carrying a bit of an injury but he’ll fire up for this game.

“Been in the Manly system and played at NSW Cup.”
