EVENT PREVIEW

As eight male and female teams prepare for next week’s NSW All Schools carnival, the message is clear from NSW selectors.

The NSW All Schools 15 and under Boys and Girls AFL Championships will be held in Lavington on Monday and Tuesday, with sides competing for the right to be crowned best team in the state, along with coveted NSW guernseys.

With five girls and three boys teams battling it out for a spot at the nationals in Ballarat in July, there’s a clear memo for players looking to take their game to the next level.

“They’re looking for skills and endeavour,” NSWCIS AFL convener Terry Caldwell said.

“They want players that can be tenacious, chase the ball and play for the team rather than for the individual. That has to show through.

“It’s easy when you’re playing with your mates, but when you’re thrown into teams where you don’t know each other, that’s where you need a team mentality.”

The event has played witness to some big names coming through the ranks who have gone on to represent NSW, however Caldwell said making the side wasn’t the be and end all.

“There’s people in the AFL now that have come through here,” he said.

“Charlie Spargo, Will Setterfield, Zac Sproule and Harry Perryman all played in the one side.

“Kieren Jack was involved in one of the first carnivals I was a part of. He didn’t make the NSW side but went onto captain the Swans.

“Just because kids miss out, doesn’t mean it’s the end of their journey.

Organisers are expecting a closely contested carnival in 2023, with a new format providing a greater level of competition.

“It’s been in this format for three years. It’s proven much stronger with the combined regions. We have kids from Broken Hill through to the Tweed competing,” Caldwell said.
“CHS has won the boys division for the past two years, while CIS edged out the Catholic girls last year.”
