Shute Shield finals: Gordon ambush Randwick, strange feat in Eastwood v Manly semi, results

A team effort ambush and a young rugby star playing a crucial role with a strange amount of points delivered these clubs their spots in the Shute Shield preliminary finals. Finals Week 2 wrap.

There was elation for Gordon and heartbreak for Randwick at Coogee as the visitors pulled off an extraordinary second half comeback on Sunday to take possession of a preliminary final spot against Northern Suburbs in the Shute Shield.

Gordon chased for all but the final stanza of the incredible match Randwick looked to have sewn up early.

But a late yellow card penalty try delivered the 2022 Shute Shield champions a 24-23 win over Randwick in their semi-final on Sunday.

Gordon were tryless in the first half and came from 10 points down at half time to steal the match away from Randwick.

They will now take on minor premiers Norths for a spot in the grand final to be played at Leichhardt Oval while Sydney University and Eastwood will battle for the other berth this coming weekend.

EASTWOOD YOUNG GUN CAUSES MANLY MARLINS HEARTACHE

SATURDAY: Tane Edmed turned 22 on Tuesday then turned on 22 points for Eastwood in their 32-26 thriller over a fighting Manly Marlins in week two of the Shute Shield Finals on Saturday.

The fantastic win in the Shute Shield semi-finals on a stunning afternoon at North Sydney Oval will see now Eastwood pitted against Sydney University in the preliminary finals.

The winner of Sunday’s match between Randwick and Gordon will meet Norths in the other finals match next weekend.

NSW Waratahs fly half Edmed was deadly accurate from the tee with two conversions and six penalties to help his side into the preliminary final.

He also held up Aaron Blacklock in the dying minutes of the game to save his side from potential defeat.

Eastwood stamped their domination early to take a 16-12 lead into the halftime break after a try for from Mark Nawaqanitawase and great kicking from Edmed.

George Worth added a second in the second half with the rest of Eastwood’s points scored off Edmed’s boot.

Kemueli Valenti scored Manly’s first try with captain Ivan Fepuleai and Blacklock both going over in the second to keeps the Marlins right in the game to the end whistle.

Blacklock was unlucky not to score a second in the final minutes of the game with his quest for the line thwarted by Edmed.

Manly ended their season with seven straight losses after leading the Shute Shield early.
