There’s still work to be done and the attack needs “tweaking” but Waratahs coach Campbell Aiken said his charges are on track for their 2022 opener of Super W.
Aitken’s squad demolished the ACT Brumbies women in their final hitout before the season opener against Western Force on March 24 at Allianze Stadium.
The Waratahs defeated the Brumbies 29-5 in a match at Wollongong early in March.
Warringah’s Margot Vella scored twice, new recruit Ella Ryan stood out and 16-year-old schoolgirl Caitlyn Halse broke through for a try.
Ryan has been playing Super W since her teens and has been nabbed by the Waratahs for Super W 2023.
It was Halse’s second try in a trial match after she also scored against the Reds last month.
“It was so cool. I am very proud to pull on the Waratahs jersey,’’ said the Picton young gun playing at fullback.
“I feel like I’m taking it on well and all the girls are very supportive.
“I really love the 15s game. I like the team, environment and the physicality of it.’’
Bronte Wilson, also 16, got time on the field with Sydney University player Fi Jones also impressing.
“Caitlyn and Bronte both got out there and Caitlyn scored a try which was good,” Aitken said.
“Bronte was great, it was good for her to get some minutes.
“Ella Ryan our No. 10, was great. She did really well.
“Fi Jones was also great. She has experience and is everywhere.”
It was the Tahs second trial win against a Super W opponent but came off two straight losses to New Zealand sides in historic lead-up matches.
“There were no injuries which is alway good,” said Aitken, who had numerous players still rehabilitating, including Wallaroos stars Eva Karpani and Grace Hamilton.
“It was five tries to one but I thought we could have done more.
“We are playing a new attack system and we just have to stick with it, keep our composure more.
“We want to make everyone a better rugby player. We are encouraging them to think for themselves, think on their feet.”
Waratahs scorers in the trial were Margot Vella, Warringah, Layne Morgan, Newcastle, Claudia Meltzer, Warringah, Caitlyn Halse, Burraneer and Margot Vella, Warringah.
