Woy Woy has continued its mid-season revival after coming home strong to defeat Ourimbah 40-22 at Woy Woy Oval.

After a fairly even opening exchange the Roosters ran away with the match in the second half, with Cameron Moran and Jayden Horo both scoring doubles as the home side ran in seven tries to four.

“We were happy to get the win,” said Woy Woy coach Blake McLean. “We’re just taking it one week at a time because we’ve had these injuries.

“It was a bit of a scrappy game at times, but we still put on 40 points. I wasn’t happy letting in 22 but I was happy with the effort from the lads and to come away with the two points.”

After a horror injury crisis that has crippled the club in the early part of the season, Woy Woy welcomed back winger Derek Duff for his first game of the year while powerful forward Lima Teaupa also returned for just his second start of 2025.

They also built on the return of Moran and Beau Bovis in recent weeks as the Roosters fielded a strengthened side.

However it was Ourimbah who struck first when backrower Riley Pennell scored off a kick early.

The teams traded tries in the early stages and were locked at 10-all before a burst gave Woy Woy an 18-10 lead at the break.

Another try not long after the break extended the Roosters’ lead, and while Ourimbah did hit back with a couple of tries of its own in the second, Woy Woy managed to keep its opponents at arm’s length to secure the two points.

“We were always sort of eight points ahead in the game and ran away with it in the second half,” said McLean, who praised the performances of forward Joel Body.

“We moved Joel Body back in the middle and he played nearly 80 minutes in there. It was an awesome effort and he was probably our best player on the field,” said McLean, who was also pleased with the display of new recruit Jayden Horo.

“He’s played a few games for us now and he’s very versatile. He played five-eighth for us this week but he’s played front-row and lock. He’s just a good football player.”

After a tough start to the season that saw them lose their opening three games, the Roosters have now won three of their past five and have moved up into sixth on the ladder, just three points behind fourth-placed Kincumber.

Meanwhile the Magpies slip down to seventh with a record of two wins and six losses.

Woy Woy 40 (Moran 2, Horo 2, Hannell, Body, Wilesmith tries; Piepers six goals, Horo one goal) defeated Ourimbah 22 (Bissaker 2, Pennell, Maloney tries; Bissaker three goals)

UNDERSTRENGTH EAGLES SHINE IN GF REMATCH

They might have had a half a team of regular starters missing and were facing off against their rivals from the last three grand finals, but Erina has once again demonstrated the enormous depth the club has at its disposal with a very impressive 18-4 victory over Toukley at Erina Oval.

Despite conceding an early try, the Eagles took control of the contest with a high-percentage brand of footy to knock over the Hawks and extend its unbeaten start to the season to eight games.

“I’m really proud of the way the boys turned up,” said coach Dane Allen. “We had eight of our genuine first graders not playing, so to have a few blokes debut, bring a few blokes up from seconds and turn up against Toukley, who have arguably been the best team in the comp for the past three years, I’m very proud. “The boys just turned up and we played the way we wanted to play. We just grafted away, went set for set and kept the percentages high when it came to the completion rate to see if they were good enough to beat us and thankfully they weren’t.”

It had been a disrupted set-up for Erina, who lost Riley Stevenson, Jack Smith and Darby Elton to injury in last week’s draw. This was compounded by the absence of Nate Dwyer and Luke Maljevac, both on holidays in Europe, while centre Finn Douch was added to the list after struggling to get through the week of training.

And while Kiran Page opened the scoring for Toukley after an Erina mix-up from a kick, the young Eagles showed great maturity to get on top in the contest.

Debutants Noah Owens and Bailey Sigsworth both crossed the stripe to put the defending premiers ahead before winger Tim Fitzpatrick scored in the second half to secure the 14-point victory.

The victory against the competition heavyweights has once again highlighted the outstanding depth on show at Erina, who remarkably remain undefeated in first grade, reserve grade and in the under-19s.

“We talked about the old cliche of ‘next man up’ but I think it’s a lot deeper than that now,” said Allen.

“When we play at our club now we’re of the opinion that we’re going to win regardless. I suppose we just have a bit of arrogance to us and that’s been developed over the last couple of years.

“I think when clubs have that it’s a hard thing to get over the top of because the confidence is high regardless of who’s standing next to you. This game was a really good example of that.

“We did a couple of things differently in terms of our structures and the way we played our footy but all in all it just came back to completing high and making the opposition beat us instead of us defeating ourselves.

“Especially in the second half, we were just relentless: had all the defensive pressure, forcing errors, attacking the line and turning the ball over on the last tackle and forcing them to come off their own line. Then defensive pressure again, forcing them to turn it over. Rinse and repeat sort of stuff.”

The victory pushes Erina a stunning five points clear at the top of the table with seven wins and one draw, while Toukley slip to third.

Erina 18 (Owens, Sigsworth, Fitzpatrick tries; Davies three goals) defeated Toukley 4 (Page try)
