There were some statement performances as a couple of sides shone during a thrilling round 10 of the Rugby League Central Coast competitions.

A star-studded team showed what it can do by pushing the undefeated premiers all the way in an exciting draw while one returning club put in its best performance since returning to the competition with a huge upset.

Kincumber has given Erina its biggest test of 2025, holding the defending premiers to a thrilling 16-all draw in a bruising clash at Erina Oval.

Both sides lost multiple players to injury early in the game as the Colts led for most of the contest, only to be pulled back on three separate occasions in the second half by the resilient Eagles, who kept their unbeaten start to the season alive.

“It was a good game, they tested us,” said Erina coach Dane Allen.

“We were down to 14 players after about 20 minutes. We lost three blokes, which didn’t help our cause. We had one middle left on the bench and those middles had to play massive minutes.

“But we just stuck in there. Gutsy: that’s the word I’d use. Very gutsy.”

It was bittersweet for Kincumber captain-coach David Fifita, who was pleased with his team’s performance but disappointed not to walk away with the two points after leading for most of the game and going ahead 16-6 midway through the second half.

“It was the same the first game (18-12 loss in round five): we lost it ourselves. We were up all game but just let ourselves down in the last 15 minutes. We lost two players early in the game so credit to the boys.”

The was a similar sentiment of on both sides, with Erina and Kincumber both dropping the ball over the line on separate occasions as the Eagles were left to rue throwing a pass that led to an intercept try for Kincumber in the second half.

“That was one of those crucial moments in the game and they took their chances, whereas we probably didn’t,” said Allen.

“We probably bombed a couple but we were gassed and fatigued. Luckily we do have a good fitness level and were able to stay with them and take the draw in the end. Whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing, I’m not sure. But it’s not a loss, so I’ll take that as a positive.”

Fifita was outstanding for the Colts as their offloads and second-phase play caused Erina some problems.

“It’s always been a part of our game, we used it well in the first game against them but we just missed our goals,” he said. “They scored from two kicks in the first game, so we backed our defence but we just fell short in the end.”

And despite not walking away with the win, Fifita said the performance will give his side plenty of confidence for the second half of the season.

“They know we’re coming. We had certain players out of our team and we just showed what we can do with a few youngsters and a couple of boys who backed up from reserve grade – it was good.”

In arguably the most anticipated game of the round played in front of a healthy crowd at Erina Oval, the home side got off to a tough start, losing centre Riley Stevenson to serious dental injuries after a head clash in just the second set of the game.

Kincumber rubbed salt into the wound by going up the field in the next set, with star recruit Matt Moylan putting Nathan Davis through a gap on the edge for the opener after just five minutes.

The Colts almost went in again shortly after, with centre Kurt Halls dropping the ball over the line as he attempted to plant it down.

Things went from bad to worse for Erina as backrower Jack Smith dislocated his shoulder on the quarter-hour mark before Darby Elton was taken off with a nasty head knock sustained while trying to make a tackle.

Despite these blows, the Eagles showed plenty of resilience in defence as the Colts took a 4-0 lead into the break.

Kincumber had successfully kept the Eagles scoreless for the first 40 but it took Erina just six minutes in the second half to break through when Finn Douch dived over in the corner lock things up at 4-all.

In the very next set the home side charged up field and went ahead by two points when Douch slotted a penalty goal.

However a couple of errors opened the door to Kincumber and the Colts went over through Kyle Lang to make it 10-6 with just over 20 minutes remaining.

After a tight opening the game was now going from end to end. Erina looked odds on to score on the left edge, however Riley Burke dropped the ball over the line.

It proved to be critical as the Eagles threw an intercept shortly after to give Kincumber a 16-6 lead.

However just as they have done for the past couple of seasons, the Eagles came home strong, first crossing through Oliver Clements and then Douch to lock things up for a thriller draw.

The draw stretches Erina’s unbeaten start to the season out to seven games while Kincumber slips to fifth with a record of four wins, one draw and two losses.

Erina 16 (Douch 2, Clements tries; Douch two goals) drew with Kincumber 16 (Davis, Lang, Radley tries; Marschke two goals)

OURIMBAH PUTS WYONG TO THE SWORD

Ourimbah has put together its most impressive performance since returning to the first grade competition, wiping aside local heavyweights Wyong 26-4 in a comprehensive display at Bill Sohier Park.

Two weeks after recording their first win of the season and one week after a heartbreaking loss to Kincumber, the Magpies flew out of the blocks to take a comfortable halftime lead before closing out the game as they ran in five tries to one.

“That’s been coming. We’ve had a couple of close games and that’s the performance I knew we had in us,” said coach Ben Bell.

“It all just clicked, everything fell into place from the kick-off. We just stuck to the plan and I don’t think they were in the game, we played them out of it.”

Ourimbah started on the front foot and took the lead early thanks to a try to halfback Lauchlan Bissaker in just the third minute.

The Magpies doubled their lead shortly after, and when winger James Gerdol crossed for his eighth try of the season, the home side had raced out to a 14-0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes.

And while Charlie Thompson pulled one back for the Roos on the stroke of halftime, Ourimbah continued its dominance after the break as tries to Brodie Alderice and Brock Elford sealed the impressive victory.

“I challenged the guys to take it to them in the first 10 minutes and the ride the wave – and that’s what we did. We just never took our foot on the gas,” said Bell.

“Another thing was that we had a look at ourselves and our game plan,” he added. “We thought we needed to play a game that suited our style, so we played a bit flatter and a bit faster and it got us on the front foot – and they couldn’t stop us.”

The victory takes the Magpies up to sixth place on the ladder with a record of two wins and five losses, while Wyong slips to fourth with five wins and three defeats so far this season.

Ourimbah 26 (Bissaker, Gerdol, Alderice, Elford tries; Bissaker three goals) defeated Wyong 4 (Thompson try)

20-MINUTE BLITZ SEES TOUKLEY SHUT OUT WOY WOY

Toukley has jumped up into second place on the ladder after downing Woy Woy 26-4 at Darren Kennedy Oval.

A four-try, 20-minute blitz late in the first half proved to be crucial as the Hawks took a 22-0 lead into the break and set themselves up for a comfortable victory.

“Our second half was very ordinary but we had a good 20-25 minutes in the first half that put the game to bed,” said Toukley captain-coach Jake Fitzpatrick.

“We just made a lot of errors in the second half. Ill-discipline: we had one in the sin bin for a high shot,” he added.

“I’m not too disappointed in it. We could have finished the game better but the first half was very good.”

Indeed, after a tight opening the Hawks really turned up the heat midway through the first half.

It started 23 minutes in when Toukley ran some nice shape from an attacking scrum and finished off the move with Harrison Packham planting the ball down in the corner.

They doubled their lead on the half-hour mark after a quick play-the-ball and some nice work from Sam Grose and Fitzpatrick put Corey Willmott over.

Grose and Fitzpatrick combined again to find space through the middle to set up Terence Seuseu, before the Hawks delivered the hammer blow in the very next set when Kye Leaudais pulled off an excellent flick pass to put Aaron Heaven over in the corner and give his side a 22-0 lead at the break.

“I wouldn’t say it was our best half but it was probably our best 20 minutes (of the season),” said Fitzpatrick.

“At the start of the game we didn’t execute too well and then we had a 20-minute period where we completed really well, played fast, pushed up in numbers and things happened on the back of that. If we can build into some 80-minute performances at that level we’ll be very hard to beat.”

And while Toukley didn’t quite bring the same intensity out of the sheds in the second half, the skipper was nevertheless pleased with his team’s defence, which has conceded just one try in the past two games.

“That’s what our squad has been about since 2021: you win competitions on the back of your defence,” Fitzpatrick said.

“Our marquee point of the game is that we want to make sure we’re turning up defensively and then the attack should take care of itself. They scored one try on the back of when we had one in the bin. We scrambled really well but it probably just got a little much in the end.

“But defensively I’m very happy with how we’re getting numbers in tackles, our line speed, our edge defence isn’t passive, which is great.”

Following last week’s 12-2 win over The Entrance, the result is the second crucial victory for the Hawks in successive weeks, with the team moving into outright second place with a record of five wins and two losses.

Meanwhile the loss continues Woy Woy’s difficult start to 2025, with the Roosters slipping to eighth.

Toukley 26 (Packham, Willmott, Seuseu, Heaven, Page tries; Fitzpatrick three goals) defeated Woy Woy 4 (Knebel try)

In the other round 10 fixture, The Entrance returned to the winner’s circle after accounting for Berkeley Vale 40-22.
