The opening round of the under-21 Poidevin-Gray Shield in a new T20 format saw fast-paced cricket action across ten fiercely-contested matches.
Four cricketers – Western Suburbs’ Finn Gray, UNSW’s Thomas Byrnes, St George’s Jack Hartigan and Penrith’s Liam Doddrell – raised the bat after scoring speedy half centuries as UNSW’s Ethan Jamieson and Sydney University’s Hugo Ikeda celebrated five wicket hauls.
Last season’s joint premiers Gordon suffered a round one defeat after a spirited batting performance by St George proved to be too difficult to chase down at Hurstville Oval.
Parramatta, the other 2020/21 premiership-winning team, had no trouble maintaining their winning ways with a bowling demolition job seeing Fairfield-Liverpool all out for 57 runs. The total was chased down inside 11 overs for the loss of one wicket.
The round one winners were Manly-Warringah, Sutherland, St George, Mosman and UNSW in the Sixers Conference and Penrith, Campbelltown-Camden, Parramatta, Blacktown Mounties and Western Suburbs.
A Team of the Round has been selected based off the individual performances in the opening round.
