Petersham Bowls Club and Pro Wrestling Australia form unlikely duo in major fundraiser

Fists and chairs are set to fly in an unlikely collab between lawn bowls and professional wrestling as an inner west community hub raises funds in the most entertaining way possible.

Nothing quite sums up the inner west like holding a professional wrestling event on a bowling green.

Some would call it madness, which ironically is what makes wrestling the spectacle it is.

The Petersham Bowling Club and Pro Wrestling Australia are coming together for a one-of-a-kind fundraiser this Saturday,

The beloved community hub will play host to the Rampage event, a fitting name as the club looks to raise funds for a much-needed accessibility upgrade.

PBC events, functions and bookings manager Hayley Lyon said works are a necessity for the building.

“This will be the debut of Rampage which is an all-ages wrestling event here at the club,” she said.

“We’re raising money for an accessibility upgrade here at the club. The last upgrade which happened, which wasn’t an accessibility one, was in 1973 and the club was founded in 1896.

“As you can imagine there’s not been much update and they weren’t thinking about that then.

“It’s our top priority. So far we’ve raised over $50,000 and we need $500,000 to get everything going.

“We’ve got Young Henrys coming down who are going to look after the beers, PWA are bringing the entertainment, there’s going to be commentary. It’s a really exciting event for us.”

One might think lawn bowls and professional wrestling don’t go hand-in-hand, but Lyon believes it’s the next step in the array of offerings from the club.

“We do live drawing, we do live music, we do a hoedown, we do author events. Wrestling is pretty much the natural elevation from all that.

Among those wrestling on the card is ‘The Dragonheart’ Kai Drake,

“We’re all about community and we’re all about building up the grassroots around us,

“With the Petersham Bowling Club, it’s a pretty old place but we really want to modernise it. By everyone coming down and having a beer, they’re helping build that ramp.”

While his sentiments towards the club are mindful, the same can’t be said for his opponents on Saturday, as MK+Ultra competes in trios action.

“They’re fairly new wrestlers. So we’re going to give them a welcome to the business.”

As one of the biggest names in the PWA, ‘The Human Weapon’ Charli Evans is backing her stablemates in North Shore Wrestling to put on a show.

“There will be some crazy, hard-hitting, high-flying, fast-paced action. It’s entertainment in all aspects, so it’s something for everyone,” she said.

“North Shore Wrestling over everyone. North Shore Wrestling on top.”

RAMPAGE commences at 5pm on Saturday 22 February at the Petersham Bowling Club. To purchase tickets, click here.
