The future of AFL in Sydney could be dawning in the west if a young group of Goannas are anything to go by.
This weekend pits the Swans and Giants together in the 27th edition of the Sydney Derby, and there’ll be plenty of Parramatta young guns hoping to one day feature in the fixture.
The Goannas are riding high after an incredible opportunity saw their U14s Academy travel down to Melbourne to play against a local team and take centre stage at the Carlton vs GWS blockbuster.
Parramatta president Michael Bright said the group of 21 players travelled down together as a cohesive unit to produce a memorable result.
“The purpose of the trip was to provide further opportunities for developing and aspiring players across Greater Sydney,” he said.
“Right from the start they gelled as a group and that was reflective across our trip and the level of footy they played.”
The Goannas took on the Werribee Centrals in a friendly match and taught their Victorian counterparts a lesson, coming out on top 134-0.
”They’ll take from this confidence and belief in their own game but also share this experience with their non footy playing mates and hopefully use as a source to attract new players to the game,” Bright said.
Following on from their big win, the Goannas embarked on a trip to Marvel Stadium, where they formed a guard of honour for the GWS Giants.
It’s been a strong season so far for the Goannas in the AFL Sydney competition, with the premier women sitting in second spot and the U20s women in third.
