LISA FIAOLA CUP
Cronulla claimed it’s first win of the Lisa Fiaola season with a crushing 26-6 defeat of South Sydney at Shark Park.
You wouldn’t know the Sharks were witness after the produced a hot start, and with the sin bin of Hannah Kalland they sprinted away to a 16-0 halftime lead on the back of a Felila Fakalelu double.
Milla Caine stretched that lead in the second half with a double to put the finishing touches on the success.
EELS MAINTAIN STREAK
Parramatta made it three-straight wins after cruising to a 44-0 win over St George at Eric Tweedale Stadium.
Riding high coming into the contest, the Eels looked every bit the confident side as they raced out to lead 20-0 at the break.
Bailey Ma-Chong came off the bench and added a double within the space of three minutes in the second half, with Jasmine Rorani doing the same in the closing stages to lock their spot near the ladder leaders.
TIGERS DOWN COAST LATE
It shaped as a match of the round contender and delivered, as the Wests Tigers recorded a 26-16 win over the Central Coast at Camden.
Two of the division’s top teams came together and couldn’t be split through the first 30 minutes.
Things remained tight midway through the second half at 16-all before tries to Sakari Ritchie and hooker Paige Attard allowed them to pull away late for their fourth win of the season.
BULLDOGS FLEX MUSCLES
Canterbury showed it is still the team to beat in the U17s girls after smashing North Sydney 60-0 at Kenthurst.
They were on fire early as they sped out to a 26-0 halftime lead on the back of a six-try first half.
That form carried over into the second half with Asha Taumoepeau-Williams, Abbey Fuz and Lahnayah Daniel completing their doubles as the Bulldogs reached the half century for the second-successive week.
ILLAWARRA CAUSES BOILOVER
Illawarra has caused an upset at Sid Parrish Park with a 26-10 defeat of the Roosters.
The first half was all Illawarra as the home side rattled off three tries in just 13 minutes to leave the ladder leaders shell-shocked and facing a 14-0 halftime deficit.
The tide turned in the second half however, as the visitors quickly cut the margin back to just 4 with 15 minutes to play.
Just as it looked like the Roosters would storm home to remain undefeated, Ella Greatz was able to give the Steelers breathing room once more at 20-10.
The Roosters couldn’t bridge the gap, with Skye Spencer sealing the win with minutes to play.
KNIGHTS ON THE BOARD
Newcastle is off the mark in the Lisa Fiaola Cup after taking down the high flying Sea Eagles 44-6 at Kurri Kurri.
Going winless from their first three games, things didn’t look good for the Knights after conceding within two minutes.
They recovered however, as a double to Taylah-Jane Belcher lifted them to a 16-6 advantage midway through the first half.
It was more of the same from the Knights after the break, with Belcher completing her hat-trick with ease after scooting 20 metres from dummy half to score without a hand being laid on her.
TARSHA GALE CUP
A dominant first half has propelled Cronulla to a big 36-12 win over South Sydney at Shark Park.
Koreti Leilua and Tia-Jordyn Vasilovski both had two tries apiece inside the opening 16 minutes as they surged to a 26-0 lead.
Mikayla Langer and Niyokah Dumas struck early in the second stanza to give the Rabbitohs some pride, before Faith Vili quickly doused any hopes of a comeback.
Cronulla improved to three wins and a draw from their five games, with Souths still looking for their first win of 2024.
EELS FIRE DESPITE BINNING
Parramatta were reduced to 12 women early, but had enough in the tank to down St George 30-0 at Eric Tweedale Stadium.
Hayley Bell was sent to the sin bin in the 12th minute, but the Eels still managed to put on two tries while down on numbers.
They kicked on to a 22-0 halftime lead and with Rory Muller scoring two, they were able to power on without having their line crossed.
TIGERS START RUN
The Wests Tigers made it back-to-back wins after holding out Canberra 18-12 at Camden.
After racing out to an 8-0 lead on the back of early tries to Cheyenne Baker and Shelbi Szabo, their lead was cut to six at halftime.
Claudia Brown pushed it back out to 12 early in the second half, before Lola Fletcher helped set up a grandstand finish.
The Tigers held strong though to continue their climb up the ladder.
BULLDOGS REMAIN ON TOP
Canterbury also remains without defeat after proving too strong for North Sydney 38-0 at Kenthurst.
A typically dominant Bulldogs outfit looked every bit the top team with an 18-0 first half, before Isla Talau was sent off in the 36th minute.
That didn’t deter them as they raced in a further four tries to make it five-straight wins to start the season.
STEELERS SHOW TITLE CREDENTIALS
Illawarra has made a statement in a big way, thrashing the Roosters 28-6 at Sid Parrish Park.
In a battle of the unbeaten contenders, the Steelers turned it on early to race out to a 22-0 lead at halftime with the visitors having no response.
When Indie Bostock crossed for her second try of the afternoon the score ballooned to 28-0, before Mele Ketuu finally broke the drought for the Roosters.
That’s the only joy they would have as the Steelers closed out the game to remain in a share of first place.
SEA EAGLES SWOOP FOR DRAW
Three late tries have helped Manly grab a late draw against Newcastle with a 24-all scoreline in Kurri Kurri.
The Knights looked to have the game all wrapped up as they held a commanding 24-12 lead midway through the second half, and still led by eight with less than six minutes to play.
That changed when Aleksandra Tunufai got on the scoresheet, before Tahlee Maroney’s second of the afternoon gave her team the chance to win the game.
The conversion attempt from near the sideline was waved away, giving Manly its second draw in as many weeks.
HAROLD MATTHEWS CUP
Penrith has overcome a torrid fortnight to bounce back in style with a 30-12 Harold Matthews win over Illawarra at Windsor.
The Panthers showed a much-needed intensity from the outset as they took an 18-6 lead into the break.
Jayden Carter and Cameron Bamblett completed their doubles in the second half to complete the comprehensive win and move them back into the top six.
KNIGHTS GRIND OUT MANLY
Newcastle has prevailed in a low-scoring encounter to defeat Manly 16-6 in Kurri Kurri.
A flying start helped the Knights rocket out of the gates to a 10-0 lead, before Logan Tolar scored soon after the break to get the Sea Eagles back to within four points.
The second half remained close for the remainder, before Jace Cox helped to seal the win with 90 seconds remaining.
SHARKS EXTEND SOUTHS’ PAIN
Cronulla stretched South Sydney’s winless run to four games with a 28-14 victory at Shark Park.
Both sides were evenly poised through the opening half-hour with the Sharks holding a slender 12-10 lead at halftime.
Johnathan Mansour crossed soon after the break to stretch the advantage to eight, before Darcy Feltham’s second of the day cut the deficit for the Rabbitohs back to four.
Two tries in the final four minutes denied the visitors and kept Cronulla’s hot streak intact.
DRAGONS CLAIM ROAD WIN
St George brought up consecutive Harold Matthews wins after downing Melbourne 22-18 at Seabrook Reserve.
The first half remained in the balance between the two sides desperate for their second win of the season, before Waka Hammond struck twice to edge the Storm ahead 18-10.
Captain Alex Futialo brought the visitors closer, before Jayden Rawson’s 49th minute try proved the difference in the end.
TWO RUNS LIFT MAGPIES
Western Suburbs started and finished strong to finish with a 36-12 defeat of Canberra at Camden.
A hot start saw them post the opening three tries and race out to an 18-0 lead, before the Raiders were able to hit back with two of their own either side of halftime to get back to within one score.
A Heamasi Makasini double propelled him to a personal haul of 20 points to keep Wests unbeaten in 2024.
GUN SIDES UNABLE TO BE SPLIT
Parramatta and Canterbury turned on a classic encounter and were forced to split the points in a 20-all draw.
Both sides came into the clash without defeat, but it was the Eels that started strongest to open up an 18-6 lead early in the second half.
The Bulldogs fought back strongly, crossing three times in 10 minutes to take a 20-18 lead of their own, before Lincoln Fletcher was able to tie it up with a penalty goal.
Cyrus Bloomfield was then sent off in the final two minutes, giving Matthew Barakat the chance to win the game off his own boot, but the shot missed.
CENTRAL COAST NARROWLY DENIES NORTHS
Central Coast managed to hold off a determined North Sydney charge to claim a 14-10 victory at Kenthurst.
Two tries to Tyriq Campbell helped the Roosters to a comfortable 10-0 lead at the break.
The two sides traded four-pointers early in the second half to maintain that margin, before Raymond Maikhael scored in the 55th minute to get the Bears to within four points.
Unfortunately for Norths they couldn’t add another as they still search for their first win.
WARRIORS GO BACK-TO-BACK
On the back of their history making first win last weekend, the Warriors backed it up with a gritty 16-4 defeat of Balmain in Pukekohe.
Searching for their first win, the Tigers were able to post first points through Filipe Huahulu, before New Zealand tied things up at the break.
Then it was Militonimolela Sikuvea and round four hero Lennox Tuiloma who were able to put the game away in a five-minute stretch to cap off a memorable first home game for the U17s.
SG BALL CUP
Penrith had to survive a major scare, but pulled out enough to knock off Illawarra 24-16 at Windsor.
The previously unbeaten Steelers couldn’t match it early, trailing 18-0 before Tom Kirk gave them some momentum heading into halftime.
When Kirk had his second it was game on with 15 minutes to play with the margin reduced to two.
That was before Judah Galuvao pushed it back beyond a converted try to lift the Panthers to their third win of the season.
SHARKS EXPLOSION SINKS SOUTHS
Cronulla turned on an incredible second half display to dismantle South Sydney 52-16 at Shark Park.
With the game in the balance at 16-10 at the break, the Sharks quickly changed that fact with six tries in the second stanza.
Michael Gabrael finished with a hat-trick and Adrian Sandy a double as they showed their attacking firepower.
HOT START KEEPS ROOSTERS UNBEATEN
The Roosters made it five in a row with a comfortable 48-16 win over North Sydney at Kenthurst.
Four tries in the opening 14 minutes gave them an early 24-0 lead, before the Bears were able to hit back with two of their own prior to halftime.
Tyreece Tait and Zac Sarfati completed their doubles in the second half, with the accurate boot of Jake Elliott converting all eight tries.
BULLDOGS CAUSE UPSET
Canterbury has turned in its best performance of 2024 to upset Parramatta 32-16 at Eric Tweedale Stadium.
The Eels scored first through Mohamed Alameddine inside three minutes, but the visitors were able to control most of the running from that point on.
They led by double digits for most of the second half and sealed the win with Logan Spinks barging his way over just minutes from the final siren.
MAGPIES SURVIVE LATE SCARE
Western Suburbs had to hold out a fast-finishing Canberra to claim a 20-18 victory at Kirkham Oval.
The boot of Tallyn Da Silva proved the difference in the end as a 14-0 Magpies advantage turned into just a two-point lead with 14 minutes to play.
Daniel Waqa gave the home side some breathing room that was enough in the end, before Mathias Petone Tomuli-Ah-Kuoi scored on the buzzer to reduce the gap.
DRAGONS BACK BREATHING FIRE
St George recovered from its first defeat of the season in strong fashion, claiming a 24-10 win over Melbourne at Broadmeadows.
The home side struck first but it was the Dragons who went in to the sheds with a 14-10 lead.
That margin remained for most of the second half, before late tries to Ryan Hutchinson and Jesse Williams guided St George home.
KNIGHTS BLITZ TOO MUCH FOR MANLY
An early blitz left Manly reeling and unable to recover as they went down 54-14 to Newcastle in Kurri Kurri.
Five tries in the opening 17 minutes set the tone for a rampant Knights outfit as they flew out to a 26-0 lead.
They slowed down from that point on but still had too much firepower, as Connor Votano, Wilson De Courcey, Blake Dorahy and Logan Aoake all finished with doubles.
WARRIORS INTO FINALS PICTURE
The New Zealand Warriors moved into seventh spot on the ladder after a 20-6 win over Balmain in Pukekohe.
Despite scoring the opening two tries, talented Tigers fullback Cameron Kanaan was able to ensure the visitors trailed by just two points at the break.
Francis Tuiamauga gave the Warriors some breathing room midway through the second half, before front rower Rodney Tuipulotu Vea was able to complete his double.
