LISA FIAOLA CUP
The Sydney Roosters put on a clinic to take down St George 58-0 in the Lisa Fiaola Cup at Henson Park.
Taking an unbeaten record into the clash, the Roosters were in full control from the outset in another professional display.
It started early as front rower Tehillah Prasard crashed over, helping them to a 20-0 halftime advantage.
The Roosters fired out of the blocks after halftime to quickly put the game away, with Samurai Pari Ah-Cheung picking up a loose ball and racing the best part of 40 metres from to seal it early.
Tyra Dymock is in her first season as a front rower and came away with a try in the win,
“Just to be in this environment, we’re all friends and our coaches are always pushing us to get better every week. Things are going great,” she said.
“We worked hard last week and we’ll work harder again to take on Penrith next week.”
Tyra is the daughter of former league great and currently Manly NRL assistant coach Jim, and said he has always helped her to improve her game.
“This is my first season playing prop. I love tackling, and maybe one day I’ll be a lock just like my dad,” she said.
“He always gives me advice. That’s why I like having him here. Sadly he’s not here (due to coaching commitments), but I’ll show him the video.”
BULLDOGS CONTINUE FINE FORM
Canterbury turned in its most complete performance of the season to thrash Penrith 48-4 at Mt Druitt.
Racing out to a 24-0 advantage at the break on the back of a Josinah Filisi Tauiliili double, the Bulldogs didn’t let their foot off the pedal.
Kiana Vatubua and Paige Tauaneai both added doubles in quick succession to help take down the previously unbeaten Panthers in style.
CENTRAL COAST ON FIRE
A first half blitz has guided the Central Coast to a big 36-6 win over Cronulla at Shark Park.
Five tries within a 12-minute stretch helped the Roosters open up a huge 28-point margin at the break, courtesy of a double to Mahlie Cashin and classy centre Mia Vaotuua who picked up a hat-trick.
Ella Knowles secured her second of the morning shortly after the break to cap the stunning performance and take the Central Coast to 2-1 for the season.
STEELERS LAY BITE INTO BEARS
Illawarra managed to hold off a North Sydney charge to prevail 42-8 at Kenthurst.
The Steelers raced out to an early 20-0 lead, before Aleesha Martin got the Bears on the board in the shadows of halftime.
They were back to within 12 after Liana Ngatai Mauri touched down, before Illawarra hit back to again take the ascendancy.
Michala Hardy and Ella Greatz both posted doubles as Illawarra improved to 3-0.
KNIGHTS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT
Newcastle has fallen just short of a miracle comeback, going down to the Wests Tigers 22-18 at St Johns Oval.
A key stretch on either side of halftime helped the visitors impose themselves on the contest with a 22-0 margin after Alavina Tu’ifua touched down.
Instead of laying down the Knights decided to fight with 13 minutes remaining, with a Makenzi Nelson double getting them to within four points with five minutes to play.
The Tigers survived however, picking up their second win of the season in the process.
RABBITOHS START SEASON IN STYLE
South Sydney is off the mark in the Lisa Fiaola Cup after a devastating 28-0 defeat of Manly at Mascot.
With two narrow losses to start 2024, it all came together for the Rabbitohs with a complete display against the Sea Eagles who were themselves coming off a big win over the Dragons.
Kirrawahn Duckett continued her try-scoring form with a double to join winger Tahlya Dower who also crossed twice.
TARSHA GALE CUP
The Roosters hit 60 points for the second time in as many weeks, taking down St George 62-0 at Henson Park.
In what was a one-sided affair from the opening whistle, the Roosters were relentless in the 12-try display, crossing the line six times in the opening half to jump out to a 30-0 margin.
Aaliyah Boland and Anabelle Ross both posted doubles within the opening 30 minutes to maintain their unbeaten run in 2024 as their quest for a hat-trick of titles looks to be well on track.
BULLDOGS DESTROY PANTHERS
Canterbury turned it on and didn’t let up as they piled on 14 tries to hammer Penrith 72-4 at Mt Druitt.
Both sides came into the game with wins in their opening two matches, but it was the Bulldogs who left as the dominant force.
The fixture was still in the balance at 24-4 at halftime, before the Bulldogs went ballistic in the second half to post nine tries.
Fullback Abby Aros completed her hat-trick, while Bella McEachern and Isla Talau finished with doubles.
RAIDERS ON THE BOARD IN ‘24
Canberra pulled off a stunning upset to get their first win of the season, downing Cronulla 16-10 at Shark Park.
Last year’s semi finalists came into the contest with a point to prove, and struck first through Elise Simpson to lead 6-4 at the break.
Jaydika Tafua got things back on level pegging for the home side with 15 minutes to play, before Simpson’s second try proved the difference, giving them the lead with 10 to go that they would hold onto.
STEELERS KEEP RUN ALIVE
A hat-trick to five-eighth Evie McGrath has propelled Illawarra to a huge 50-0 win over North Sydney at Kenthurst.
Coming into the contest in a share of first, the Steelers were able to add to their points differential as they ran rampant on the road.
McGrath had her treble within 41 minutes, while Mia-Rose Walsh, Indie Bostock and Darcy Eade all chipped in with doubles.
KNIGHTS TAME TIGERS
Newcastle is back in the winner’s circle after a three-try haul to Lacey Mitchell lifted them to a 24-4 defeat of the Wests Tigers at St Johns Oval.
In what was a crucial game for both sides coming off round two losses, the Knights hit the ground running early to wrestle momentum in the middle stages of the first half to open up a 14-0 advantage.
Kiani Duckett kept the Tigers within 10 shortly after the break, but Mitchell’s third and another to powerhouse second rower Evah McEwen put the result beyond doubt.
SEA EAGLES CLIP RABBITOHS
Manly maintained an unbeaten start to the season with a convincing 52-6 win over South Sydney at Mascot.
Taleenza Nelson had a double and the Sea Eagles had all the running in the first half, but it was Nyokah Dumas who gave the home side a hope with a try on the stroke of halftime.
They couldn’t use that momentum to continue, with Nelson completing her hat-trick a minute into the second half.
Things went from bad to worse after Chloe Beazley was sent to the sin bin, with Alianna Tonuu going on to grab a double and Manly brought up a half century in consecutive weeks.
HAROLD MATTHEWS CUP
Canterbury has sounded out a huge warning in the Harold Matthews Cup with a 46-10 victory over Penrith at Windsor.
In the battle of the unbeaten sides, the Panthers opened up a narrow 10-6 lead early doors, but from that point on it was all the visitors.
They closed the half out with four unanswered tries to lead 30-10 at the break, with hooker Mason Phillips securing his double in the second half to cap off the crucial road win.
MANLY KEEPS FLYING
The Sea Eagles went a season without a win, and now they’re 2-0 after downing South Sydney 24-6 at Redfern.
Full of confidence after their first win in almost 700 days, Manly breached the Rabbitohs’ line within three minutes through Beau Alexander.
It turned out to be the only score of the first half, before captain Reilly Caswell doubled the margin soon after the break.
Cody Hill gave Souths a fighting hope midway through the second half, but once Alexander had his second, the home side was resigned to its second defeat in a row.
ILLAWARRA SHUTS OUT COAST
The Steelers claimed back-to-back Harold Matthews wins after keeping the Central Coast scoreless in a 20-0 victory at Collegians.
Two bursts proved the difference in the contest, as Leeroy Weatherall and Phoenix Johns crossed in quick succession to help Illawarra take a 10-0 advantage.
With the game still up for grabs, Lexin O’Dea and Jack Talbott both scored in the final 10 minutes to help them claim a valuable two points.
DRAGONS FIGHT OFF BEARS
St George didn’t have it their own way, but did enough to deny North Sydney 28-14 at Kenthurst.
A much-improved opening 30 minutes helped the Dragons race out to a comfortable 18-4 lead at the change, before the Bears kept their noses in it.
When Aiden Crowley crossed with 12 minutes to play they were back within two scores, however the boot of Riley Brannock saw him sink two penalties and finish with a personal haul of 16 points in the success.
FIELD GOAL LIFTS SHARKS
A 59th minute field goal from Callum Grantham saw Cronulla escape with a 19-18 defeat of Canberra at Shark Park.
Both sides were desperate for a win and that showed with the Raiders as they came ready to play, firing out to a 12-0 scoreline inside 14 minutes.
Cronulla got into the groove and hit back with three unanswered tries of their own to take the lead approaching the final 10 minutes, before Kruger Roache levelled things up once again.
It was left to five-eighth Grantham to be the hero, slotting the extra point with 90 seconds on the clock to get his side home.
MAGPIES HOLD ON
Western Suburbs remained unbeaten through three rounds, but not without a scare as they edged out Newcastle 18-16.
The Magpies looked to be cruising through the opening half-hour as they opened up a 14-0 lead.
Newcastle struck twice in three minutes midway through the second half to cut it back to four, before Glassie Glassie’s second try of the afternoon gave Wests breathing room once more.
Ashton Allen made them sweat though, getting the Knights to within two with as many minutes to play, however they couldn’t land the killer blow.
WARRIORS CAN’T MATCH ROOSTERS
An inspired second half has lifted the Sydney Roosters to their second-straight victory, downing the Warriors 28-18 on the Central Coast.
Both sides traded blows throughout the first half to see the two tied at 12-all coming into the second half.
A Jackson Yeates try just minutes into the second stanza set the tone for a matchwinning run from the Roosters, as the Warriors still search for their first everyh victory in the U17s competition.
SG BALL CUP
Parramatta kept a determined Balmain outfit at bay to remain unbeaten with a 38-12 win at Eric Tweedale Stadium.
The Eels raced out to a 14-0 lead as they beat the clock during the opening stages, before the Tigers hit back to trail by just two at the break.
Beau Lucien crossed just a minute into the second half to get the home side back on track, as they shut-out Balmain to remain undefeated.
TOP SIDES CAN’T FIND A WINNER
Penrith and Canterbury couldn’t determine a winner in 70 minutes, with the sides locked at 22-all at Windsor.
A back-and-forth encounter befitting match of the round status saw the goalkicking boot of Alex Conti prove the difference, as the Panthers scored five tries to four but were forced to settle for a point.
Leading 14-4 in the shadows of halftime, Penrith conceded just before the break as Mitchell Woods helped Canterbury get back to within four.
Harry Wald’s second of the afternoon edged them further clear, but it was Conti who scored and converted approaching the final 10 minutes to again level the scores, with no side able to break the deadlock.
SOUTHS FIND THE WRIGHT WAY
The inclusion of Daniel Wright proved a major one as South Sydney held off a fast-finishing Manly 26-22 at Redfern.
The strike centre scored in the opening minute and had a first half double as the Rabbitohs edged ahead 8-6 at the break.
Three-straight tries after halftime then helped them kick clear with a 26-6 advantage with less than 20 minutes remaining.
That’s when Manly started to fight back, and when Heath Turner found his way over the line, they had one last set to try and snatch victory, only to fall short.
STEELERS’ SECOND HALF BLITZ
A big second half has helped Illawarra overcome a stubborn Melbourne 34-12 at Collegians.
Trailing by six coming into halftime, captain Daniel Meafou helped tie the scores with the last play of the half.
From that point on the unbeaten Steelers were able to hit their straps and pull away from the visitors.
Winger Tom Kirk ended the afternoon with a hat-trick as Illawarra continued its impressive start to 2024.
DRAGONS DROP HAMMER ON BEARS
St George remains in red-hot form after a 60-10 demolition of North Sydney at Kenthurst.
The Dragons raced in 11 tries to maintain a share of top spot, keeping Willie Talau’s perfect coaching record in SG Ball.
Jesse Williams picked up a hat-trick and Campbell Lyons a double as they turned a 28-4 first half into their third-straight victory.
CANBERRA BREAKS DUCK
The Raiders are off and running in 2024 with a 34-18 defeat of Cronulla at Shark Park.
Despite suffering two big losses to start the year, it was an outstanding showing from Canberra, highlighted by a double to Atini Tuialii.
The second rower scored on either side of halftime to help his side open up a 30-6 lead midway through the second half.
The Sharks were able to hit back with a few of their own, but ultimately they left their run too late.
KNIGHTS OUTLAST MAGPIES
Newcastle packed too many punches against a gutsy Western Suburbs outfit in a 36-26 victory at St Johns Oval.
It took just 43 seconds for Connor Votano to get the scoring underway for the home side, as they raced the clock to lead 18-0.
A 24-6 halftime margin was reduced to just a converted try as the Magpies fought back, before Wilson de Courcey’s second try of the afternoon pushed the margin out too far.
ROOSTERS FLEX MUSCLES
Last week it was left to a last-ditch field goal.
This time around it was much easier for the Roosters in SG Ball after taking down the Warriors 32-16 at Morry Breen Oval.
They looked every bit the contender as they powered to a 20-0 halftime advantage after big De La Salle Va’a barged over early.
Round two hero Toby Rodwell brought up his second of the afternoon just minutes into the second half to give them an unassailable lead.
Just when it looked like the game was over, the Warriors hit back with three tries of their own to cut it back to 10 with 15 minutes to play.
That was before Va’a sealed it with his second of the day, keeping the Roosters in equal top spot.
