It’s a massive opportunity - to play in front of Australian and rugby Academy selectors after missing the cut in major teams. This group of teens will be “going for it” according to their coach.

Rugby coach Gary Tunks said it will be a fantastic “story of redemption” if one of his young charges forces their way into the Gen Blue team to take on rival rugby academies in upcoming weeks.
Tunks has been put in charge of the NSWJRU Invitational XV to play in front of Australian and Gen Blue selectors in Sydney next week on a big game day at NSW Waratahs headquarters.
The match against Gen Blue II will be played at David Philips Field at Daceyville on Tuesday, the same day the NSW Waratahs Academy Gen Blue I side will play the Melbourne Rebels Academy.
The team has been selected from players across Sydney Junior Rugby Union, NSW Country and NSW schools and comprises some of the best young talent in the state – with a point to prove.
“It’s the first time I’m aware that they have done this, give a set of boys an opportunity to right a selection wrong or get their names and faces in front of others,’’ Tunks said.
‘LOVES GETTING DIRTY’: SYDNEY JUNIORS TO WATCH
“If this isn’t an incentive or a reason to fight I couldn’t help you.
“These are guys who are in the selectors eyes but for whatever reason, missed out. There is still opportunity though. Under 18 selectors are coming to watch and Gen Blues guys will be there.
An Australian under 18 boys team will play against New Zealand later this year.
From Tuesday’s game there will be the opportunity for selection in the Waratahs Academy teams to play the ACT Brumbies on September 25.
Tunks was in charge of the Barbarians team that finished second at the Australian schools rugby championship at Knox Pymble in July.
“This is a story to keep trying, never give up,” he said.
Tunks met many of his charges for the first time last weekend and said he has been impressed with their skills and determination.
“We had a good training session and another this coming weekend,’’ he said.
“Obviously they have a rare opportunity to push themselves up for some higher rep honours and don't want to miss it.’’
