TEAM OF THE WEEK: ROUND THREE

1. Diya Sambrane (Gordon)

The Gordon right-hander shows no signs of slowing down. With a knock of 82 off 99 balls, Diya charged to her second fifty in three innings and now leads the competition for runs scored with 184 at 61.3.

2. Isobel Glen (Sydney)

On a tough day at Penrith, Isobel propped up Sydney’s innings with a defiant 64 from 105 balls including an opening stand of 69 with Marnie Flett.

3. Willa Pearson (Manly)

The state football rep is never far from the action. At Bankstown on Sunday, Willa’s glovework behind the stumps resulted in two wickets, then with the bat she mastered a difficult wicket with a match-winning 61 not out.

4. Emma Rippon (Penrith)

Outstanding at the top of the order, Emma made a composed 59 and helped initiate Penrith’s victory with a 97-run opening partnership alongside Yashika Ramprasad.

5. Yashika Ramprasad (Penrith)

After picking up 2/11 with the ball, the opener quickly strapped on the pads and raced to a near run-a-ball 57 in a pivotal first-wicket stand with Rippon.

6. Layla Graham (Greater Hunter)

The tall speedster left her fingerprints all over Greater Hunter’s victory. Picked up 1/7 from four quality overs, then returned later in the day to blast a brisk 51 from just 41 balls that included two maximums.

7. Taylor McMahon (St George-Sutherland)

The dynamic all-rounder is compulsive viewing in the Brewer Shield. Consistent with bat and ball, Taylor upped the Slayers’ run rate with a 34-ball 45 and then bagged 2/13 from six nagging overs.

8. Nadia Carvalho (Sydney University)

The Sydney Uni captain did it all in the team’s breakthrough victory over Parramatta. After a steady contribution of 22 in the middle order, Nadia wreaked havoc with the ball on the way to claiming 4/20 from eight overs.

9. Kristy Thapa (Sydney University)

Flying under the radar, the Uni keeper struck 23 important runs from No.10. Then in the field she pouched four catches including the final three Parramatta dismissals.

10. Lily Crabbe (Manly)

A coach’s delight, Lily bamboozled Bankstown’s top order. In four pinpoint overs, the new ball specialist set up Manly’s win with a stunning 3/6.

11. Heidi Nicholls (Parramatta)

On another day, Heidi’s 4/28 would have probably been enough to land Parramatta a victory. During an inspirational spell, she removed four of Uni’s top five batters.

ROUND THREE WRAP

After two rounds of T20 matches, round three of the Brewer Shield saw all seven contests follow the 50-over format.

Once again, the upsets continued while there were a host of fine individual efforts. Round three wrap, plus photo gallery.

CLASS WINS OUT

A stand-alone 61 not out from Willa Pearson has seen Manly overcome Bankstown by four wickets on a challenging Grahame Thomas pitch.

Set a victory target of 101 after knocking over the home side inside 38 overs, Manly stumbled early as Bankstown quick Milla Bruce (2/17, eight overs) struck twice in a lethal opening spell.

Pearson and Eve Burke (12 off 32 balls) steadied the ship, compiling a patient third wicket partnership of 63 before Manly eventually crossed the line for the loss of six wickets in the 33rd over.

Bareen Haider (28 off 33) and Jessica McMillan (32* off 68) were the top contributors in a Bankstown innings that was left teetering at 4/21 after Lily Crabbe (3-6, four overs) created havoc with the new ball.

“The win was set up in the field,” said Manly coach Bill McLerie.

“There were three great catches. First time captain Saoirse Ford took a couple including one low down from a scorching drive, and the girls kept the pressure on with two run outs.

“The win capped off a great day. Holly Searles and Grace Pike made their debuts, both are locals who progressed through the Peden Shield and into our third grade side.”

An all-round sporting talent, Pearson also showed her class with the gloves, taking a catch and playing a part in a run out that help compliment Crabbe’s early inroads.

“Lily bowled consistent line and length from the start,” said McLerie. “She bowls right-arm medium pace with natural inswing, but is able to cut the ball away from the right-handers.

Charlotte Allen (1-13) picked up the first wicket in the third over, and then Lily backed it up with a double-wicket maiden.”

SLAYERS GRIND IT OUT

Wickets proved tough to come by at Olds Park as St George-Sutherland overcame a rapidly improving Blacktown by 51 runs.

Opting to bat, the Slayers stuck to their game plan and reached a competitive 6/222 in an innings where all top six batters scored 21 runs or better.

Once again Taylor McMahon was a shining light. Coming in after an opening stand of 57, the dashing right-hander hit nine boundaries in a game changing 45 off 34 deliveries. Skipper Beth Millican was next best with 41 off 47, while leg-spinner Keya Patel took the honours for Blacktown with 3-37.

“The plan was to bat out the 50 overs,” said Slayers co-coach Brett Campbell.

Bria Campbell (21 off 89) and Libby Burgess (32 off 54) ground out a cautious start, and we reached 50 after about 17 overs.

“We wanted wickets in the shed to be able to lift the rate in the final overs. Taylor played a fantastic knock. She played all around the ground and hit a six over mid-wicket, before she was bowled a by a good delivery that jagged back from Tori-ana Newcomb (1/26).”

In reply, Blacktown’s chase mimicked the home side’s start. After an opening stand of 64, Tanishka Reddy (36 off 65) fell to the leg-spin of Chrysta O’Sullivan (1/23) immediately following drinks.

Athira Dilip Kumar (52* off 85) joined Kuhu Nanda (47 of 92), and the duo took the score to 110 before Nanda fell to Garwa Li (2/24) in the 33rd over.

From there, the required run rate continued to climb until the end of the 50th over with the score 6/171. For the Slayers, McMahon capped off another fine all-round performance with 2-13.

HUNTER BACK ON TRACK

Greater Hunter rebounded from last week’s loss with a seven-wicket victory over Campbelltown Camden at Woongarrah Sports Complex.

After opting to bat, the Ghosts set the home side a target of 152 in an innings that contained a mammoth 43 extras. Off the bat, Trushna Hadawle top scored with 27 off 47, while for Greater Hunter Evie O’Brien (1/20, eight overs) and Tilda Pola (1/5, four overs) bowled tidy spells.

The home side made short work of the chase, losing three wickets before hitting the winning runs in the 32nd over. Felicity Wharton (43* off 50) and Layla Graham (51* off 41) supercharged the innings with an unbeaten stand of 86.

PANTHERS POUNCE

A flying Penrith have shown they’re a genuine finals contender after cruising to an eight-wicket win over Sydney at Cook Park.

In pursuit of a competitive 185, Penrith openers Emma Rippon and Yashika Ramprasad put the result to bed with an opening partnership of 97. Ramprasad was the aggressor, hammering eight fours and a six in her 57 off just 69 balls, while Rippon was more measured in compiling 59 from 93.

With the hard work done, Japleen Kaur kept the foot on the pedal, powering Penrith to consecutive victories with an unbeaten 42 off 40 that included seven boundaries.

Isobel Glen was best for Sydney, the opener kept the innings together with a defiant 64 off 105 before the last wicket fell on 184 in the 49th over.

Penrith’s Kahlan Mouwen (3/52, 10 overs) made it back-to-back three wicket hauls, while Ramprasad (2/11) and Sragvi Jayavarapu (2/23) finished as the other multiple wicket takers.

SWANS HATTRICK

The Southern Swans maintained their unbeaten start to the season following a five-wicket win over UTS North Sydney.

Janani Vijaya Raghavan steadied the Bears’ ship with 37 from 105 at the top of the order, before Yuhansa Jayakody (27* off 33) and Elspeth Herbert (24* off 40) took the score to 5/147 after 50 overs.

New ball bowler Ebony Winston (0/23, 10 overs) typified the Swans’ control, bowling four maidens, while Amelia Valdez (2/10, six overs) and Maya Huetter (2/16, three overs) both chimed in with two wickets each.

An opening partnership of 72 by Valdez (36 off 59) and Ava Dragovic (41 off 78) saw the home side charge to a third straight win with seven overs to spare.

UNI SET STANDARD

Sydney University secured back-to-back victories after they accounted for a strong Parramatta outfit by 39 runs at Merrylands.

In a show of character, Uni overcame the loss of several early wickets and an inspired spell of bowling from Heidi Nicholls (4/28, seven overs) before the final wicket fell with the score on 177.

Sienna Knight (42 off 38) rescued the innings from 3/42 in a knock that included nine boundaries. Batting at No.10, Kristy Thapa scored crucial runs, finishing unbeaten on 23 from 29 balls.

At 2/18, Parramatta struck early trouble in reply before opener Aishleen Gir (47 off 75) and skipper Kleo Hendry (41 off 66) moved the total to 99. From there, the wickets continued to tumble before Parra were bowled out for 138.

Uni captain Nadia Carvalho (4/20, 7.2 overs) was outstanding with the ball, and she received excellent support from Diksha Chowdhary (3/26, eight overs).

GORDON TOO STRONG

Gordon opener Diya Sambrane continued her dream start to the season, hitting a game-high 82 in her side’s 140-run win over Northern District at Waitara.

After being sent in, Gordon posted a commanding 6/239 in an innings where Kingkini Mazumdar (2/26, 10 overs) finished as the pick of the ND bowlers.

The home side could only muster 99 in reply, and were best served by Olivia Mitchell who came in at No.7 and top scored with 48 off 65 balls.
