BREWER SHIELD SEASON PREVIEW, 40+ STARS TO WATCH
TEAM OF THE WEEK: ROUND SEVEN
1. Aditi Shidore (Campbelltown Camden)
A rock at the top of the order, Aditi’s 77 was the highest score of the round and she also returned 1/33 with her leg spinners.
2. Libby Burgess (St George-Sutherland)
In a narrow victory, the Slayers opener kept the innings together as a handful of wickets crashed around her. Libby’s 61 included 11 boundaries and was pivotal in a one-wicket win.
3. Aleena Syed (Penrith)
In a game-high 38, the right-hand opener kept the Norths attack at bay before ramping up the scoring rate. In all, Alleena found the rope on five occasions and cleared it once.
4. Amelia Valdez (Southern Swans)
One of Southern’s most consistent performers, Amelia stepped on the gas to help propel the Swans to victory with a classy 42 off 70 balls.
5. Evie Fisher (St George Sutherland)
Under immense pressure, Evie showed her fighting qualities to carry St George-Sutherland over the line with a match-winning 72 not out from 88 balls that included nine fours and three maximums.
6. Sarah Bawcombe (Parramatta)
The pathways quick continues to deliver with both bat and ball for Parra. Against Northern District, Sarah hit a brisk 33 at No.3 and followed it up with a new ball spell of 2/11.
7. Emilia Billinghurst (Gordon)
With a fighting 35 not out Emilia rescued Gordon from a world of hurt in Sunday’s victory. Without the wicketkeeper’s resilience in the middle order, the bowlers would have had far less to defend.
8. Jorja Horan (Gordon)
Fast, full and straight was the order of the afternoon at Beauchamp Oval, and that’s exactly what Jorja delivered in two blistering spells that yielded 5/17.
9. Yashika Ramprasad (Penrith)
North Sydney were still in the hunt for victory until the ball was tossed to Yashika . In a fraction under six overs, she wrapped up the contest with a phenomenal 5/20.
10. Era Bhoir (Blacktown)
The 13-year-old right-armer certainly turned plenty of heads at Glendenning on Sunday. A late inclusion to the Blacktown squad, Era shocked Sydney Uni’s top order on route to a memorable 5/24 on Brewer debut.
11. Sally Ryan (Southern Swan)
The bustling left-armer put the Swans on the road to victory when she dismantled Sydney’s middle order with 5/19 off just five overs.
ROUND SEVEN WRAP
With more upsets and wicked twists, the finals race in the under-18s Brewer Shield remains wide open after a feast of stunning cricket in round seven.
Four bowlers hoisted the ball after five-wicket hauls, while with the bat, the rescue missions continued. Wrap from all seven venues.
HORAN’S BAG OF FIVE
Jorja Horan has bowled Gordon to a 26-run victory over Manly, after the NSW pathways rep bagged her maiden five-wicket haul at Beauchamp Oval.
Chasing a modest 107, Manly wilted under the pace and rhythm of the right-arm quick who rattled the stumps on four occasions across two blistering spells to finish with an extraordinary 5/17.
“It’s the first time I’ve taken five wickets, and it’s great to get it on our home ground,” said Horan after Gordon moved to third on the table with its sixth victory – already one more than they recorded last season.
“Personally, I’d much rather have it here at Beauchamp Oval. I actually played my first Brewer game here, so the fact it has gone full circle is pretty nice.”
If not for Emilia Billinghurst, Gordon could have easily crashed to defeat long before Horan had a chance to weave her magic. Amid a constant tumble of wickets after choosing to bat, the keeper dug in and rescued the Stags’ innings to finish unbeaten on 36 from 56 balls.
Manly wrapped up the home side’s innings for 107 in the 30th over, with Lily Crabbe (2/12) and Abigail Bland (2/1) the best of the seven bowlers to take wickets.
At 1/31 in reply, Manly looked headed for a sixth win themselves. Keira Terrey (16 off 27) and Willa Pearson (22 off 25) were in command until Eleanor Wise-Mann (2/4) trapped Terrey in front of the stumps.
Manly still had the upper hand, but it quickly changed in spectacular fashion when Eveline O’Farrell caught the dangerous Pearson on the square leg boundary.
“I wish we could hit more runs with the bat, but our fielding has really come through, especially in those difficult situations,” said Horan.
“That was a vital catch to take. Eveline is an amazing fielder, and I probably trust her the most out of all of our fielders, and I’m glad we had her in that spot. Audrey Kirk (2/21) bowled well, and the fact she got Willa with her leg spin was a major turning point.”
From there, Horan went through the tail like a hot knife through butter as Manly crashed for 81 inside the 28th over.
After struggling for wickets in the early rounds, the speedster’s continued hard work alongside coach Quincy Titterton paid handsome dividends.
“The past few weeks were a bit iffy, but it has been better lately,” said Horan. “Quincy said bowl full and straight, and the wickets would come, especially at Beauchamp given the variable bounce.”
BLACKTOWN BREAKTHROUGH
Blacktown’s season is back on track after they held off a resurgent Sydney University by 13 runs in a thriller at Joe McAleer Oval.
Chasing their first win of the season after being bowled out for 146, the home side never looked back after skipper Kuhu Nanda threw the ball to new recruit Era Bhoir.
Still only 13, the tall medium pacer began her spell with Uni cruising at 0/31. After a nervous first over, the right-armer then removed both openers in her second before landing a third in five deliveries when she bowled Tanisha Shanmuganathan.
Prabhkirat Kaur Mahal (3/14) joined the party, before Bhoir (5/24, seven overs) struck again in quick succession to become the second Blacktown player to take five wickets in a Brewer match.
At 9/101, Blacktown’s first victory of the season seemed assured. But it wasn’t without several nervous moments as No.11 Holly Barnett (24* off 35) edged Uni towards the target before Ruby Carter fell to leg spinner Gayathri Naik (1/24) with the score on 133.
Earlier in the day, Abigail Whiting propped up Blacktown’s lower order with an unbeaten 29 off 42. While for Uni, Saskia Gibson bowled with good pace to finish with 3/27.
GREAT ESCAPE
A brilliant unbeaten knock of 72 by Evie Fisher has seen St George-Sutherland come from the clouds to sink Campbelltown Camden by one-wicket at Raby.
With Aditi Shidore (77 off 103) returning to the top of the order, the Ghosts met a strong Slayers attack head on and posted a challenging total of 172.
Taylor McMahon (3/26) and Anika Shah (2/18) were the pick of the bowlers, before the home side quickly gained the upper hand.
Madison Eddie (3/40) and Trushna Hadawle (2/25) took the new ball for Campbelltown Camden and made the early breakthroughs as the visitors slumped to 4/25.
In a Slayers card that finished with five ducks, it was left to opener Libby Burgess (61 off 99) and Fisher to repair the damage. The pair put the chase back on track with a stand of 80 for the sixth wicket, but when Burgess departed with the score on 123 another three wickets quickly followed.
At 9/145, the Ghosts were on the cusp of their second victory only for it to be taken away by Fisher who blasted five boundaries in a final wicket partnership of 30.
PANTHERS STUN BEARS
After storming to a comfortable 94-run victory over North Sydney, Penrith have shown they are the real deal in 2024-25.
Still to find their best form with the bat, Penrith managed to post 166 at Cook Park in a total aided by a whopping 42 extras. Opener Aleena Syed top scored with 38, but it was with the ball where the Panthers grabbed the ascendancy.
Aside from Janani Vijaya Raghavan’s 35 at the top of the order, the Bears crashed to be all out for 72.
Manorath Gill proved a handful with the new ball. Almost impossible to score off, she finished with the day with 3/5 off five overs.
But with 5/20, Yashika Ramprasad proved the star of the day as Penrith moved to sixth on the ladder with its fourth win of the season.
SWANS ON TOP
A five-wicket haul from Sally Ryan has seen the Southern Swans maintain their unbeaten start to the season with a seven-wicket win over Sydney.
Sydney chose to bat, and initially it was anything but one way traffic at Lake Illawarra as Isobel Glen (18 off 40) and Zahra de Wit (41 off 65) laid the foundations for a promising total.
But when de Wit fell to Ryan it was 4/81 and the wheels suddenly fell off. The last seven wickets fell for 44 as Sydney were bowled out in 37 overs for 125.
Ryan ended up with 5/19 from five overs, and she was well supported by opener Natalia Egan who snared 2/17.
Katie Martin (45 off 102) and Amelia Valdez (42 off 70) did the bulk of the scoring as the Swans reached the target with 15 overs to spare.
BIG WIN ON THE ROAD
Bankstown extended its run of good form after they downed reigning premiers Greater Hunter by 19 runs at Ron Hill Oval.
Chasing a fourth win in three starts, Bankstown headed north to Toronto where they made a strong start with the bat before collapsing for 133.
Ava Gaughan opened the innings with a captain’s knock of 38 from 86 balls and was well supported by Zoe Wood who compiled a measured 20 off 74 balls.
Layla Graham was outstanding the home side, taking 4/16 with her right-arm pace.
Ruby Morrison (25 off 67) top scored in reply and was one of four to reach double figures. But the wickets continued to tumble until Lacey Metcalfe (3/22, nine overs) closed out the victory in style, blasting out the last three wickets with her final nine deliveries.
PARRA REBOUND
Parramatta proved too strong for Northern District, moving to fifth on the table following a 101-run victory at Asquith.
Thanks to some lower order resistance from captain Kleo Hendry (36 off 73) and the consistent Georgia Aldridge (37* off 59), Parra posted 173.
Kingkini Mazumdar (3/41) was the best of four multiple Northern District wicket takers.
In reply, the home side could only muster 72 in an innings where Heidi Nicholls took 3/8.
