The NSW Rugby League has charged three spectators with “code of conduct offences”, including one for “racial intolerance”, following an investigation of footage captured during last Sunday’s Macarthur RL match between Thirlmere and Campbelltown Collegians.
Footage of the match streamed live on YouTube captured the trio hurling abuse at Campbelltown Collegians players following the side’s victory at Thirlmere Sports Ground.
Following a host of profanities, a female voice in the crowd can be heard screaming “get back on your boat”, allegedly aimed at a Collegians player of Polynesian descent.
Based in Sydney’s south west, in a statement on the club’s Facebook page, the Thirlmere club announced on Monday that it has commenced an investigation “with the assistance of the NSWRL”.
The vision was shared on Facebook and has been viewed over 250,000 times, with people left in disbelief at the remarks.
“That’s disgusting behaviour from adult women this should be sent to the group board and further actions need to be taken racism is not acceptable in any way shape or form.!! How embarrassing,” one poster commented.
Contacted for an update on proceedings, a NSWRL spokesperson revealed the outcome of the investigation on Thursday afternoon.
“The NSWRL has charged three female spectators with several code of conduct offences following a Macarthur Premiership match between Thirlmere Roosters and Campbelltown Collegians on Sunday 28 April,” the spokesperson said.
“The offences include using offensive or obscene language, and behaving in a manner contrary to the spirit of the game. One of the spectators has also been charged with exhibiting racial intolerance.
“Both clubs have assisted the NSWRL with its investigation. The NSWRL, and the clubs involved, do not tolerate any form of vilification.
“No further comment will be made until the matter is complete.”
