NSW Premier Cricket: Wild finish between UNSW, Mosman in T20 Kingsgrove Cup, Hayden McLean, Jake Turner

The opposition quick has just bowled a hat-trick with the number 11 needing a six off the final ball. What happened next is the stuff of dreams. Watch the incredible video.

Incredible finish to Sydney T20 match

It was a match to long live in the memory of all present at Allan Border Oval, where the final over of a knockout T20 finals match delivered an emotional rollercoaster rarely seen on a cricket pitch.

After a determined batting performance saw UNSW claw themselves back into the contest against Mosman, thanks to some experienced batting by captain Brandon McLean, the ‘Students’ required seven runs from the final over of the day’s play.

Ex-Student Jake Turner, 30, was tasked with the final over for Mosman as UNSW’s Hayden Mclean sat in the grandstand, pads on, but with three wickets required for him to enter the arena.

Turner bowled a dot ball to open the over before taking his first ever hat trick, which included an incredible catch from English import Jordan Cox.

“I’ve had two catches dropped off hat trick balls in first grade cricket, I’ve had a plum LBW turned down by the umpire when I was on a hat trick, so it was my first hat trick,” he said.

“I thought I was never going to get one.”

With two balls remaining, UNSW’s Declan White hit a single for Hayden McLean’s first ball to be the final delivery of the innings, with six required, against his former teammate.

“In my first season of first grade with UNSW, Turner was our opening bowler,” McLean said. “He was great at passing on his wisdom and getting around me.”

McLean said he expected Turner to attempt to bowl a wide yorker, knowing it was one of his strengths, but felt at ease facing up for the single ball.

“I felt quite calm … all I was thinking was to stay as still as possible,” he said.

“It was kind of a nothing to lose mentality. He had hit me for six off the final ball of my spell so I knew I would be getting a bit of stick if we lost by six. I knew this would be an interesting moment.”

For Turner, standing at the top of his mark, his thought process was on executing a wide yorker and forcing McLean to hit across the line of the ball.

“I was just thinking to myself ‘execute my skill’,” he said.

The final delivery was sent down and was misdirected just enough to allow McLean to get under the ball and park it for six, triggering enthusiastic celebrations from his disbelieving teammates.

“I turned to look at the gate and seeing the whole team racing out is a moment I will never forget,” he said. “I have never seen a group of players so excited. My heart didn’t go under 180 beats per minute for the next 24 hours. It is a moment in time I will never forget.”

The traditional ‘circuit’ celebrations were put on ice for a drink on the hill between both teams, with McLean hinting it could be a different story if UNSW was to win the grand final qualifier against Randwick-Petersham at Coogee Oval on Australia Day.
