NSW has its latest crop of state champions after three-days of sensational action and performances at the Senior State gymnastics championship in Sydney.
The event doubled as a selection event for the Australian titles and for others kicked off the selection process for the Australian squad.
The event saw almost 4000 gymnasts compete in Acrobatic, Artistic and Trampoline events at Sydney Gymnastics & Aquatic Centre.
“This is the pinnacle event for NSW and it did not disappoint with a spectacular display of artistry, strength and power,” said Gymnastics CEO Rebecca Shaw.
We take a look at some of the stars and standouts at the event.
Jose Cabellero, 19, Sydney Olympic Park
He won the all around state title in the Senior International division.
The teenager also took out a surprise gold in the pommel, silver in parallel bar and bronze in rings.
A pommel horse specialist, Caballero only decided to attempt the all around category five days before the event.
“I thought if I could put together some good all around routines, I could sneak on the podium there,’’ he said. “I wasn’t expecting to take the gold but I can’t be happier.’’
Chase Buxton, 12, PCYC Campbelltown
In the Level 7 Under 13 division, Chase rocked, winning six gold medals and a silver.
This saw him take out the state champion in his division and qualify for the Australian Gymnastics championships for the first time.
Annabelle Burrows, 16, Sydney Academy of Gymnastics
The new Senior International all around state champion in women’s artistic gymnastics.
She won gold on floor and silver on vault and uneven bars.
She now heads to the Australian Gymnastics championships as a senior.
“I’m feeling really good about it, because gym gets tougher as you get older,” she said.
Eva Fountis, 16, Castle Hill Gymnastics
In the Senior International division Eva became the state’s vault champion and won silver all around.
The 16-year-old also won silver on floor and bronze on beam.
She is now targeting success on her favourite apparatus, the vault.
“I have a lot of power and speed, so it comes naturally to me compared to other apparatus,” she said. “It was pretty scary trying to qualify for nationals because the score is a lot higher. But I did it.”
Shaun Swadling, 30, Eastlake Trampoline Sports
Shaun is ranked 5th in the world and lived up to expectation by nabbing gold in the Senior International division - a place better than last year.
The primary school teacher became the NSW men’s individual trampoline champion and will now compete at the Australian Gymnastics championships for an extraordinary 21st time.
Abbey Konemann, 13, Sydney Gymnastics Centre
After switching from artistic gymnastics to trampolining four years ago, Abbey is now considered a rising star of the sport.
The 13-year-old tumbler became the women’s Level 6 state champion and secured her spot on the NSW team for the Australians.
Ivan and Isaac Kachan, 8, Kachan School of Tumbling and Performance
These eight-year-old twins competed against each other in Level 5, with Isaac taking the gold medal at states. Ivan also impressed with a bronze.
The boys will now be heading to the Australian championships to make their debut after making the age eligibility cut off by only two days.
Koralee Catlett, 17, Kachan School of Tumbling and Performance
Koralee defended her women’s tumbling Senior International title in a great performance.
The 17-year-old is bidding to now represent Australia for the second time at the world championships.
Cheyanna Robison, 23, Kachan School of Tumbling and Performance
Cheyanna is now ranked No. 3 in the world and lived up- to expectations by defending her women’s Senior International DMT state champion.
Leo Steimbeisser, 13, Sydney Gymnastics Centre
The talented teen pulled out a show stopper to defend his title as the men’s Youth U15 DMT State Champion.
Indianna Surian, 13, Mikayla Gumm, 19, and Sophie Edwards, 23, Oak Flats Albion Park Gymnastics & Acrobatics
After being part of the winning troupe in Australia’s Got Talent, these young guns took out the overall gold for their routines at states.
The Senior Women’s Group came together as a trio for the first time to perform some incredible skills in the dynamic, balance and combined categories.
Bronte Driver, 10, Ivy Driver, 13, and Emily Delaney, 13, AcroGym
In the highly competitive Level 6 Women’s Trio division, the Delaney and the Driver sisters made an impressive bid for gold. The trio were crowned overall champions after winning gold for all their routines and qualifying for a spot on the state team for the first time.
Alexandra Eedle, 22, Le Ray Gymnastics Academy
A week after representing Australia at the Marbella Grand Prix in Spain, Eedle became the all around champion in the Senior International division.
The 22-year-old won the all around gold, along with gold for ball and ribbon, and silver for hoop and clubs.
Mercedes McIntyre, 25, PLC Sydney
Prior to competing for Australia at the 8th Cantanhede FIG World Cup 2023.
McIntyre took out the gold for her individual routine in the Senior International division.
