NSW All Schools Athletics 2023: Best results, photos as future Olympians grab spotlight

The speedsters came out to play on day two of the NSW All Schools athletics championships with some great performances produced at Sydney Olympic Park. Result wrap and photos.

It's one of the biggest and best sporting events on the annual NSW athletics calendar, throwing a spotlight on the rising stars of the sport.

And as usual, they didn’t disappoint.

The opening days of the NSW All Schools are done and dusted with the young guns of the sport producing some great action.

On Sunday the sprinters came out to strut their stuff at Sydney Olympic Park.

In one of the closest races of the day, John McDonald from Wollemi College edged out Endeavour Sports runner Taurus Traino for a brilliant victory in the 16 year 100m final.

McDonald, from Penrith, said the result gives him confidence for the Australian All Schools championships later this year where he is hoping for a top five performance.

“Having the others there, today, really pushed me,’’ he said of Traino and bronze medallist Billy Blair from Joeys.

McDonald won the race after a false start.

“I felt like I may have lost a bit of energy there, but it was okay,“ he said.

Just minutes later it was Tara Hollyoak who took out the girls 16 year crown.

The talented basketballer from Sydney‘s northern beaches was sporting a face injury she sustained in a recent head clash on the court.

The rapidly improving speedster from Manly said while she loves basketball and plays reps for Manly Warringah, it is athletics which has her heart.

“I do prefer running,’’ she said.

“I’m really happy with that. I races are equal PB at CIS as well and have been working on my speed and endurance and it seems to be paying off.”

Cody Hasler from Picton High was the man in the 17 year 100m final.

The year 11 student was also delighted with the result and is aiming for a big performance at Australian All Schools in Perth in December.

Port Stephens runner Summah Harrison won the 17 years 100m race from Jasynta Lampret.

The 17-year-old student from Tomaree high is working towards competing and hopefully winning at the Australian All Schools later this year.

Having been sent to the sidelines for an extended period with knee surgery she is determined to come out blazing at the event.

“It wasn’t the best for me last year after the knee surgery so I’m putting everything into this,’’ she said.

“I’m working my butt off.’’

Zac Urbach turned plenty of heads with his win in the 19s 100m.

The teenager, studying his HSC at Emanuel School at Randwick, said he is unsure what is behind his current top form

“I really don’t know. Maybe it’s just because I’m more relaxed,’’ he said. “I’ve been doing my HSC so I’m not at school any more.

“And I think I might have grow in my body a bit.’’

Another highlight of Sundays racing was the 17 years 800m final where Tayissa Buchanan beat Ella Penman from Dubbo in a thrilling race.

Her winning time was just under a meet record.

“I’m really happy. I just wanted to go out and execute. What I’ve been doing in training,’’ Buchan said.

Buchan said her goal is to put down a number of top performances this season ahead of next year’s world, junior athletics Championships in Peru.
