NSW All School athletics: Day one standouts, sizzling sprinter by Sebastian Sultana

A former rugby league player snared a sensational time on the opening day of the 2022 NSW All Schools athletics meet. Standouts and day one stories.

The best sprinters in NSW came out to play on the opening day of the NSW All Schools championships with a sensational run by one young gun and another snaring a win and the title of happiest teen at the event.

More than 2000 youngsters are competing at the four day event which started on Saturday and concludes on Tuesday.

Former footballer Sebastian Sultana was one of the stars of the show, blasting blast his way to a NSW All Schools title with the fastest 100m time at the event for 23 years with his 10.53 in the 17 years 100m.

Only Olympian Matt Shirvington (twice) and Scott Richardson have bested this mark in the past - more than two decades ago.

The time of Sultana, who gave up football for athletics, beat the meet record of 10.59 set in 2012 by Josh Clarke from The Kings School

XAVIER PERRY’S BIG CELEBRATION

There were many winners on day one but they will all be hard pressed to beat the excited celebration of Xavier Perry from St Agnes.

A delighted Perry threw his hands in the air after winning the 14 years 100m final on Saturday.

“It was a big one for me,’’ Xavier said.

“I was fifth at All Schools last year and I’ve been working really hard to get better, working on my starts, acceleration.’’

Xavier said his focus at the NSW All Schools this year is to add the 200m and 400m titles to his first up win.

JOSEPH AYOADE TURNS HEADS

Another great sprinting performance was produced in the 19 years event by Joseph Ayoade who ran a PB of 10.61 – the 7th fastest of all-time at the championships.

AVA ROSS A ONE-HIT WONDER AT ALL SCHOOLS

Ava Ross decided to race just one event at All Schools this year – and nailed it.

The Newcastle sprinter won her 100m final on Saturday after finishing third in the same event last year and then second in the U15 race at the nationals.

“I just like to focus on the 100m and just wanted to do really well here and at the Australian All Schools,’’ she said.

DYLAN HALL GOES FROM RUGBY FIELD TO ATHLETICS TRACK

A fortnight ago Knox student Dylan Hall was playing for a spot in the Gen Blue 15s squad in rugby.

On Saturday he showed the speed that impresses in football on the track to win the 15 years 100m crown.

“I just really enjoy the athletics,’’ Dylan said.

Dylan is a sprint specialist after winning the 100m and 200m events at the last nationals.

JACK PROUDFORD’S BIG GOAL FOR THE SEASON

Jack Proudford has set himself a big task in 2022.

The 13-year-old from Pacific Hill wants to go one better in every event he contests at national championships this year.

At the NSW All Schools he is competing in the 100m, 200m and long jump and started his championships with a win in the 100m.

“I finished second in the 100m, 200m and relay at the nationals last year and I want to do better,’’ he said.

MATILDA HARRISON MAKES AN EARLY MARK

Last season Matilda Harrison missed the NSW All Schools with a broken shoulder.

This year she kicked them off with a win in the 100m.

“I was close to my PB but I’ve still got improvement to make,’’ she said.

Harrison will be back on Monday to race the 200m

BUSY TEEN KICKS OFF BIG CAMPAIGN WITH A BANG

Angus Clues will be one of the busiest young athletes at the NSW All Schools meet over the next four days.

The Hills Sports High student has a massive schedule of eight events at the meet.

The Lithgow 16-year-old, who now lives at St Mary’s, opened his campaign with a victory in the boys discus 1.5kg 16 years class.

‘LAZY’ JUMPER WINS TITLE

Brendan Mannasz admits while he likes doing athletics, he didn’t put a lot of time into his preparation for the NSW All Schools.

But that didn’t stop him winning the title in the boys high jump for 17-year-old.

“I just do this and a bit of soccer.

“I don’t really train. I’m a bit lazy like that. Maybe I need to train a bit. I might even try the long jump.’’

BIG NAME MISSING

It’s the event where Olympian Nicole McDermott holds the record with a mighty 1.81m leap.

And Alicia Macmillan from Ravenswood is now the champion in it with her jump of 1.55m in the girls 19 high jump on Saturday.

Defending champion and world youth competitor Erin Shaw, who won with a jump of 1.75 last year, was missing from the action, with Cayla Phillips from Pymble Ladies second (1.55m).

The 17 years girls high jump was won by Alana Pokorny from Engadine High (1.65m) with Emily Malakovski from Hoxton Park (1.60m) second and Holly Ramsey from Jannali (1.60m) third.
