NORTH West Sydney Hurricanes and Penrith will share the under 15 President’s Cup cricket title after their final ended in a dramatic tie at Kanebridge Oval on Sunday.
The undefeated Hurricanes, playing their first junior final, needed two runs off the final delivery to win, being 8-159 chasing Penrith’s 8-160 off 50 overs.
But the batsman Anmol Venkatesh, missed the ball and while scampering through for a single, was run out. However, the ball was called a wide, which ensured a tie for the teams.
Russell Elliott from Ponds CC was the batting hero, topscoring with 47 while off spinner Gianpaolo Magliolio (Kings Langley CC) bagged three wickets.
“We are the only non-cricket association in this competition and to make the final in just our second year in this age groups plus being a club, not a district association, is an incredible feat,” Hurricanes president David McDonald said.
“It also speaks for the amount of cricket talent in The Hills and north west of Sydney.
“I would like to thank everyone for their support of our club and development programs.
“We are very proud of what we have achieved so far and could not do it without you.”
It is the club’s third premiership since their merger in 2000.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes under-14s finished third, after beating Sutherland in their play off game.
