'Sorry Faf' - Wade admits to distracting Du Plessis

The Margaret Peden Shield returned with a bang yesterday, with some spectacular performances headlining day one of the NSW girls’ under 15 state championships.

A number of teams made an early statement of intent as seven T20 games were played at grounds around the state.

In particular, there were some incredible individual batting performances as some star players took their teams to victory.

Below is a wrap of all day one action.

Greater Illawarra v Bankstown

Bankstown opened its account with a strong eight-wicket win over Greater Illawarra at Bradman Oval in Bowral.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Greater Illawarra finished its 20 overs with the competitive total of 3-113. Cadence Waters top scored with 34, and was well supported by Ebony Winston (22 not out) and Jessica Bramble (17 not out).

In reply, Bankstown opener Zoe Wood grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck with some devastating batting to ensure her team chased down the total with eight wickets in hand and 4.3 overs remaining.

Wood smashed an unbeaten 74 from just 49 balls, in an innings that included 10 fours. Highlighting her domination of the run chase, the next highest scorer was Camryn Harland with 14 not out.

Central Coast v Newcastle

There was another convincing win at Hamlyn Terrace Oval, with Newcastle young gun Caoimhe Bray blasting her team to victory against the Central Coast.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Central Coast never really got going with its innings, as the loss of regular wickets slowed down the run rate.

The team finished on 6-107, with Alex-Bobbi Smith top scoring with 20 and Narthana Sivasampavan finishing with 18.

For Newcastle, five different bowlers each took a wicket, with Madison Kedwell’s figures of 1-5 from two overs and Felicity Wharton’s 1-12 from three the pick of the bunch.

While Newcastle got off to a tough start in its run chase, with opener Aaliyah Hiskens run out for a duck, there was never really any doubt with the result.

Bray, Newcastle’s 13-year-old number three, proved why she was recently selected to play at the under 19 national championships with a scintillating 68 not out from just 38 balls.

The innings from Bray, who her coach says has a fear of letting her strike rate slip below 100, included seven fours and two sixes.

She was well supported up the other end by teammate Sophie Clune, who finished with 32 not out to ensure Newcastle chased down the total after 13.2 overs to secure the nine-wicket win.

Parramatta v Penrith

Parramatta laid down its credentials as a title contender with an excellent bowling performance to set up a convincing nine-wicket victory over western Sydney neighbours Penrith at Monty Bennett Oval.

While Penrith chose to bat, the team struggled for momentum throughout the innings.

The loss of regular wickets, particularly in the top order, slowed down the run rate, with the team bowled out for 46 after 15.5 overs.

Anabel Batty top scored for the side with 17.

It was a brilliant performance from Parramatta’s bowling unit. Off-spinner Shiloh Julien picked up 2-7 from three overs, while Isabel Selems finished with the remarkable figures of 3-1 from just five deliveries.

In reply, Parramatta made light work of the run chase, finishing at 1-48 after just seven overs, with Kayla Robson top scoring with 30 not out.

Manly Warringah v North Shore

In the battle of northern Sydney neighbours, Manly recorded a strong first-up win over North Shore.

In batting first, North Shore lost some early wickets before the team’s middle order helped stabilise the innings.

Sameeksha Kuncham (41) and captain Elizabeth Yates (24) steadied the ship and helped the team to 6-115 after 20 overs.

For Manly, Kaya Punter took 2-19 from four, while Arabella Handley finished with the excellent figures of 1-9 from four overs.

Manly then went about chasing down the runs, with the team’s top order putting in an excellent display to seal the victory with two overs remaining.

Captain Hannah Moss top scored with 55 no out, while Handley was at it again with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 42 from just 28 balls.

Inner West Harbour Blue v Blacktown

Blacktown kicked off its inaugural Margaret Peden Shield game in style with a 57-run win over Inner West Harbour Blue.

Batting first, Blacktown’s opener Aarna Patel and number three Ayeshah Parkar got the team off to a strong start, scoring 34 and 21, respectively.

Number four Vani Bhadana then continued her recent good form in club cricket, scoring an unbeaten 40 from 34 balls to take the team to 3-131 after 20 overs.

The total proved to be too much for Inner West Harbour Blue, with the young side finishing its 20 overs at 5-74, with Ruby Carter top scoring with 18.

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills v Inner West Harbour Gold

All the headlines are on Inner West Harbour Gold’s batting after an incredible performance from the team’s openers set up a monster win against Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills.

After electing to bat, Inner West certainly didn’t disappoint, with openers Aanya Siingh and Emily Powell putting on an absolute clinic to finish at an incredible 0-215 after 20 overs.

Powell finished on 93 not out from 54 balls, while Siingh became the first player in this year’s tournament to score a century with an unbeaten 100 from 67 deliveries.

Between them, the batters scored 25 fours and one six to post the intimidating total.

It was all one-way traffic in chase, with a disciplined bowling performance from Inner West Harbour dismissing Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills for 64 after 16.3 overs.

Not one Hornsby player reached double figures, with Hannah Rose picking up 3-8 from three overs and six other bowlers all picking up a wicket each.

Sutherland St George v Camden

In what was the most dramatic match of the opening round, Camden secured a final-over win against Sutherland St George at Gannons Park in Peakhurst.

After being sent in to bat, Sutherland St George struggled to generate much momentum and were restricted to 5-96 from their 20 overs, with Taylor McMahon top scoring with 20 not out.

Despite the modest target, Sutherland St George made a good start in defending the total with the ball, reducing Camden to 4-14 early in its chase.

However Ava Gaughan (34) and Lily Salter (22 not out) started the rescue effort for Camden, with the pair taking the game into the final over and giving their side a chance of victory.

Despite the best efforts from Sutherland bowler Sophie Clark, who took an incredible 3-1 from four overs, Camden ultimately hit the winning runs with just four balls remaining in what was a nailbiting finish.
