Local Footy Wrap: Community leagues overcome previous wet to commence local seasons

After wet weather hampered the start of a number of leagues, local footy is back across a majority of NSW. Catch up on results from around the state in our second Local Footy Wrap.

A host of competitions from around the state recovered from wet weather to commence their seasons at the weekend.

Catch up on the results from some of the best local competitions in New South Wales.

GROUP 4

Kootingal Moonbi continued its pointscoring spree with a 66-6 demolition of Wee Waa.

Brayden Jerrard scored a hat-trick and finished with a personal haul of 28 points to take his tally to 50 inside two rounds.

RESULTS: Narrabri 18-38 Werris Creek, Gunnedah 26-44 Boggabri, Kootingal Moonbi 66-6 Wee Waa, North Tamworth 16-42 Moree

GROUP 19

Steven Ford was the hat-trick hero for Narwan as the Eels took down Walcha 46-26 in a high-scoring encounter.

The accurate boot of Tom Bell was the difference for Bingara as they defeated Tingha 24-22.

RESULTS: Warialda 52-18 Moree, Bingara 24-22 Tingha, Narwan 46-26 Walcha

GROUP 9

Former Raider Josh McCrone led the Temora Dragons to an opening round 38-20 defeat of Junee.

Across the grounds there were close results, with Gundagai edging Albury by just two points and both the Cherrypickers and Bulls unable to be split.

RESULTS: Wagga Kangaroos 34-6 Tumut, Albury 18-20 Gundagai, Young 28-28 South City, Junee 20-38 Temora

GROUP 20

Guy Thompson’s quickfire double after halftime lifted Darlington Point to a 34-point success over West Wyalong.

Griffith Black and Whites had to defend the last 10 minutes with 12 men, but hung on to down Tullibigeal Lakes 28-26. Lincon Kirby scored a hat-trick for the Sharks in their narrow loss.

RESULTS: Leeton 46-16 Griffith Waratah, Darlington Point Coleambally 52-18 West Wyalong, Tullibigeal Lakes 26-28 Griffith Black & Whites, Hay 14-42 Yenda

Tullibigeal Lake Cargelligo maintained its perfect start to the women’s season by downing Griffith 24-14 on the back of two tries from Tommi Booth.

RESULTS: Tullibigeal Lake Cargelligo 24-4 Griffith Black & Whites, Hay 14-20 Yenda

CANBERRA

The battle of Queanbeyan finished in an entertaining 32-all draw at Seiffert Oval with the Blues and Kangaroos unable to be split.

With Sam Williams at the helm as captain-coach of the Kangaroos, both sides threw everything at each other but couldn’t land the knockout blow.

Charlie Woodford had a personal haul of 20 points as Yass doggedly kept Goulburn City at bay to the tune of 32-28.

RESULTS: Tuggeranong 6-30 Woden Valley, Gungahlin 10-38 Belconnen, Queanbeyan Blues 32-32 Queanbeyan Kangaroos, Goulburn City 28-32 Yass

In the women’s Katrina Fanning Shield it was the Blues that made an emphatic opening round statement with a thumping 70-0 win over Bungendore.

Woden Valley also impressed by taking down Tuggeranong by 24 points.

RESULTS: Tuggeranong 12-36 Woden Valley, Goulburn City 0-36 Yass, Gungahlin 22-4 Belconnen, Bungendore 0-70 Queanbeyan

METRO WOMEN GOLD

Redfern pulled out enough to deny Mounties 10-8 in a defensive slog at Erskineville Oval.

Allison Futialo scored two tries and had a 20-point haul as Wentworthville surged to a commanding 48-0 defeat of Narraweena.

RESULTS: Redfern 10-8 Mounties, St Christophers 10-0 All Saints Toongabbie, Narraweena 0-48 Wentworthville

HASTINGS LEAGUE

Three tries to Jye Rousell gave Kendall a perfect start to the Hastings League season with an emphatic 56-12 road victory over Lake Cathie.

Jason Jarreyy had a similar feat for Bowraville as they were able to return from Long Flat with the points after a 38-12 victory.

RESULTS: Lake Cathie 12-56 Kendall, Lautieton 46-16 Comboyne, Long Flat 12-38 Bowraville

GROUP 16

Flying winger Maika Ravouvou crossed the stripe three times as Snowy River dropped the hammer on Bombala with a huge 58-10 victory.

Cooma trailed 32-24 midway through the second half but found a strong late kick to prevail 44-32 over the Eden Tigers.

RESULTS: Cooma 44-32 Eden, Snowy River 58-10 Bombala, Bega 32-26 Batemans Bay, Tathra 16-24 Moruya

WOODBRIDGE CUP

An enthralling second round of the Woodbridge Cup saw points aplenty and two draws across the board.

Daniel Madden scored 18 of Cargo’s 38 points in a 12-point defeat of Eugowra, while Johnny Aiaga scored three minutes from the final siren to help Oberon snatch a late 26-all draw with Cowra.

RESULTS: Blayney 30-30 Orange, Grenfell 40-44 CSU, Trundle 32-16 Manildra, Cargo 38-26 Eugowra, Molong 6-40 Canowindra, Oberon 26-26 Cowra

NEWCASTLE

A Magic Round at the Newcastle Sportsground kicked off the Denton Engineering Cup in style.

High profile Kurri recruit Blake Ferguson spent time in the sin bin while Bayden Searle was the hero for Wyong in a 25-24 victory.

Blake Austin scored on his debut for the Tigers as The Entrance edged out Lakes United 28-24, while Maitland had to dig deep to secure a 20-10 victory over a stacked Northern Hawks outfit.

RESULTS: The Entrance 28-24 Lakes United, Wyong 25-24 Kurri Kurri, Northern Hawks 10-20 Maitland, Macquarie 6-26 Cessnock, Western Suburbs 8-22 Central Newcastle

SOUTH COAST

After wet weather forced the postponement of round one, Warilla-Lake South made a winning start to the year after downing Kiama 24-6 on the back of a Justin Jones double.

Eze Harper scored two as the Sharks took out the Shellharbour derby over the Stingrays 26-12.

Gerringong started its premiership defence in style by downing highly regarded Nowra-Bomaderry 22-6.

Former NRL players Adam Quinlan and Dylan Farrell share the coaching duties of the Jets.

RESULTS: Albion Park-Oak Falts 42-12 Berry, Gerringong 22-6 Nowra-Bomaderry, Milton 24-4 Jamberoo, Kiama 6-24 Warilla-Lake South, Shellharbour 26-12 Stingrays

SOUTHERN SYDNEY GOLD

Scott Allen, Nathan Henderson and Cooper Bowen all had doubles as St John Bosco ran rampant over Cronulla Caringbah with a 60-0 drubbing.

It was Jack Allen’s two tries that helped Gymea overcome Engadine 30-14, and St Joseph’s looked the goods as they chase another title with a 30-point win over the Crocodiles.

RESULTS: Kogarah 20-26 Renown United, Cronulla Caringbah 0-60 St John Bosco, Como Jannali 4-34 St Joseph’s, Gymea 30-14 Engadine, Aquinas 0-24 De La Salle
