For this teenager there is nothing better than playing cricket with mates - especially when they will now be playing side-by-side for Australia at the under 19 World Cup in the West Indies in the New Year.

NSW Premier Cricket young guns Aidan Cahill, Lachlan Shaw and Corey Miller, all from the Northern Districts club, have been named in the 15-man squad along with William Salzmann from Campbelltown-Camden and Jack Nisbet from Sydney Cricket Club.

Manly Warringah’s Joel Davies and Penrith Cricket Club’s Liam Doddrell have been named as reserves.

While bowler Cahill is Newcastle based, Miller and Shaw live in Sydney and played junior cricket together at Hornsby.

“It is cool, having the three of us,’’ Cahill, 18, said.

“I don’t know how many times there have been three people form the same club selected for something like this.

“It’s great to share the experience. We are teammates, we are close.’’

Cahill said he, Shaw and Miller have been playing together in teams or against each other for years.

The squad was finalised following trial matches at a training camp in Adelaide last week.

Western Australian Cooper Connolly will play in his second ICC Under 19 World Cup, having been part of Australia’s previous campaign in South Africa.

The Perth Scorcher is joined by NSW quick Nisbet, Tasmanian all-rounder Nivethan Radhakrishnan and fast bowler Jackson Sinfield.

The Australian team will be coached by NSW’S Anthony Clark.

“Our squad includes players of all disciplines with experience in domestic cricket environments, and many have produced eye-catching performances across a variety of strong competitions this season,’’ Clark said.

“It’s an inside joke at the club that I am a good dancer,” said the young bowler heading to Adelaide this weekend for Australian U19 squad trials.

“I’m a good dancer. I do everything. I bust out moves in the team song. I just like dancing.

“It helps my balance and co-ordination and I’m pretty light on my feet.”

Doddrell, who made his Sydney first grade debut last year, said he has been hitting the gym and working with a dietitian to bulk up his frame in anticipation of a big season of cricket.

“I had a dietitian help me put six or seven kilos on,’’ he said.

“I basically spent Covid working on putting the weight on and improving my fitness.”

Doddrell’s hard work will be put to the test from Sunday when he and the top young cricketers from across Australia meet for a series of matches ahead of the ICC U19 World Cup in the West Indies in January.

“It’s going to be the greatest opportunity. The best thing ever,’’ said Doddrell, who was clocked a 136km/h in an under 17 tournament back in 2018.

“I’m so excited to go to Adelaide actually. I haven’t done anything for so long. It would be great to travel and be with a new bunch of guys in a different environment.”
