ROUND THREE WRAP
The magical run of a new Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership contender continued, while another emerged with an upset victory at the home of the NRLW’s newest club.
Here’s how round three of the HNWP panned out:
WENTWORTHVILLE 36-10 CENTRAL COAST
The Magpies moved to outright first on the HNWP ladder after a dominant 36-10 defeat of the Central Coast in Woy Woy.
Captain Caitlin Turnbull continued her extraordinary season to date with a hat-trick, including two tries in the opening 12 minutes to help Wentworthville to a commanding 20-4 advantage at the break.
Chantel Tugaga and Danielle Seckold both crossed for doubles in the seven-try performance that sees them remain as the only undefeated team in the competition.
ST GEORGE 20-14 CANTERBURY
St George has pulled off one of the upsets of the season to date, ending Canterbury’s unbeaten run 20-14 at Belmore Oval.
Windy conditions wreaked havoc at the spiritual home of the Bulldogs and the Dragons were able to best adapt early with Taimani Kolomaka’s 25th minute try putting them ahead 14-4.
Canterbury fought back in the second half with two tries in the space of four minutes tying up the scores, before Brittany Constable crossed 15 minutes from time in what proved to be the match winner.
SOUTH SYDNEY 20-14 WESTS TIGERS
South Sydney remains in contention with the top sides after edging out a gallant Wests Tigers 20-14 at Redfern Oval.
Turzah Donovan was a late inclusion for the Rabbitohs and a first half double helped them take a 16-10 lead at halftime.
They would go on to win their second game of the season, with 17-year-old Kiara McGregor called up to partner Maddie Studdon in the halves.
MOUNTIES 20-14 CRONULLA
Mounties has bounced back from a heavy defeat to record its second win of the season, downing Cronulla 20-14 at Aubrey Keech Reserve.
They crossed for three tries in the first half, including one while Lahtia Stone was in the sin bin, to hold a 12-0 advantage.
A second half double to Luisa Yaranamua got them back to within touching distance, but ultimately the run of the Sharks was left too late, with Mounties’ Kahu Cassidy also spending time in the sin bin.
MANLY 24-20 NEWCASTLE
Manly picked up a historic first win in the HNWP after holding out Newcastle 24-20 at Brookvale Oval.
Carissa Reid gave the Knights a dream start early in the contest, before four unanswered tries, including a Pier Pritchard double, propelled the Sea Eagles to an 18-4 lead early into the second half.
Newcastle hit back with three tries in 15 minutes to give themselves a shot at forcing a draw late, but the Sea Eagles held solid to grab their first victory in their inaugural season.
ILLAWARRA 42-24 PARRAMATTA
Illawarra showed why it has one of the most potent attacking sides in the competition after a first half blitz helped them to a 42-24 victory over Parramatta at Collegians.
An early double to Eels prop Tafao Asaua had the home side on the back foot, before they raced in four tries in the space of 14 minutes to lead 28-10 at the break.
Asaua completed her hat-trick and the Eels were back to within four points, before the Steelers were able to close out strongly through Trinity Tauaneai and Mia-Rose Walsh to seal the win.
