ROUND SIX WRAP
There was a battle for top spot, teams moving into the top four and a five-try haul capped a big weekend around the grounds in the HNWP.
Here’s how round six of the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership played out:
NEWCASTLE 44 DEF CRONULLA 14
Two big runs have catapulted the Knights into third spot after a comfortable 44-14 defeat of Cronulla in Newcastle.
Four tries in a 13-minute period prior to halftime, including a Lexi Beagan double, lifted the home side to a 24-4 advantage.
The Sharks got back to within 14 with 25 minutes to play, before the Knights closed out with a further three tries in 10 minutes, with Carissa Reid and Leah Ollerton also finishing with doubles.
CENTRAL COAST 15 DEF WESTS TIGERS 14
Melanie Watherston proved the hero for the Central Coast, lifting the Roosters to their first win of the season courtesy of a 15-14 defeat of the Wests Tigers at Gosford.
Claudia Nielsen brought the Tigers level with five minutes to play in a battle of both teams looking to get off the mark in 2024.
With time winding down, halfback Watherston stepped up to the plate and slotted a field goal to propel the Roosters to a win.
WENTWORTHVILLE 26 DEF ILLAWARRA 16
The winning run of the Magpies continued as Wentworthville came from behind to defeat Illawarra 26-16 at Sid Parrish Park.
The Steelers looked to be cruising up 16-6 early in the second half, before the Magpies went on a tear.
Four tries in a 15-minute stretch saw them wrestle control back as Danielle Seckold’s second try closed out their sixth win in a row.
ST GEORGE 24 DEF MOUNTIES 12
The Dragons kept their HNWP finals hopes intact after overcoming Mounties 24-12 at Hurstville Oval.
Out to end a two-game losing run, St George had to play from behind after Logan Lemusu helped Mounties to a 12-4 lead five minutes into the second half.
They soon tied things up, before Breanna Wood and Heidi Regan both crossed in crunch time to get the Red V home.
MANLY 28 DEF SOUTH SYDNEY 4
It was the Lavinia Tauhalaliku show at Brookvale Oval as the Manly centre scored an incredible five tries in a 28-4 victory over Souths.
A late inclusion into the side, the move proved a masterstroke as she brought up her hat-trick inside 19 minutes.
Shanelle Lyons gave the Rabbitohs something to smile about soon after halftime, but another two from Tauhalaliku saw Manly improve to fifth on the standings.
CANTERBURY 34 DEF PARRAMATTA 14
The Bulldogs put on a classy display to take care of Parramatta 34-14 at Eric Tweedale Stadium.
Canterbury started hot and by the time Abigayle Sekitoga posted her second try they looked the goods up 18-4 at the break.
They were able to go on with the job in the second half and Sarahcen Oliver scoring two tries of her own saw them move back into the top four.
