Gen Blue Cup: what U14, U15 junior rugby guns need to do to crack selection for Reds game

It's the last chance for rugby youngsters to turn heads and force their way into the U15 Gen Blue squad to take on the Queensland Reds in upcoming clashes between the top rugby academies.

A series of matches will be played this weekend at Camden Rugby Park to determine the players to line-up against their Reds opposites on October 9.

And NSW Waratahs head of talent Andrew Cleverley said it has been made clear to the hopefuls what they need to do on Saturday and Sunday to have a chance of playing.

Teams competing boast players from across the board, including those spotted at schools events, state championships, regionals and country tournaments.

“The theme they have been told is executing their role in a rugby team,’’ Cleverley said.

“The hooker must throw, lock must be a jumper, seven has to fetch and steal, they must be able to handle the nuances of rugby.

“In Sydney we see 100 kids who can run, pass and tackle but can they scrimmage, jump, do they have a good carry? We are looking at the specific skills of the game.

“We want a strong team to take on the Reds.

“It’s the last chance selection opportunity for them to impress.’’

The team will be named next week with plenty to play for on the weekend.

“It will just be 23,’’ Cleverley said of squad number. “Selection can come from any of the teams, including the U14s.’’

More than 100 youngsters will compete in the matches. FULL TEAM LISTS BELOW
