TONS OF FUN
On a day of big scores, Illawarra recruit Archie O’Hara was the first of three century-makers, as the Sydney University opener blitzed Bankstown on home turf to set up a comfortable 122-run victory.
Following on from his opening round 74, the gloveman batted through the 50 overs finishing on 135 from 158 balls in a mammoth 3/277. Edward Shand (34 off 65) shared in an opening stand of 67, while Kobi Robinson (59 off 41) closed out the innings in style.
At Manly Oval, the home side backed up Tuesday’s dominant display at Waverley. Harrison O’Brien (75 off 70) negotiated the early Campbelltown Camden raids before skipper Darcy Horstead raced to 104 not out off 91 deliveries.
In pursuit of Manly’s 6/294, the Ghosts refused to rollover and closed out the day on 8/210 with Noah Nasser on 51 not out.
On higher ground at Mosman, the Whales entered the field brimming with confidence after posting 6/209 against Parramatta. Hugh Taylor (53 off 69) was the best of a top three that all made healthy starts.
But in a lesson on how to finish the job, Hamilton Seoung carried Parra to a four-wicket victory. With 15 fours and a six, the opener batted through the majority of the innings before he was run out for a match-winning 110 off 136 balls.
LATE SURPRISE
Wests downed Gordon by five wickets at Chatswood, but if not for a new face, it may well have been a different story.
Batting first, Gordon shaped to pounce when Finn O’Farrell (34 off 41) and Sean Twining (57 off 121) took the score to 2/61.
But a week after arriving site unseen by his coach, Josh Clarke, Canberra’s Joseph Mendis (4/14) rocked the innings with four wickets as the Stags crashed to 7/77.
“Joseph came on and changed the game with his left-arm orthodox,” said Clarke about the spinner who joined Wests at late notice prior to round one.
“Gordon were looking dangerous, but Joe struck twice in his first over, and then picked up another two in his second – he had 4/1. The pitch kept low at times and he was zipping them through and caused a few headaches.”
Chasing 173, Wests had their own headaches at 2/14. However, they quickly faded as captain Rehaan Shyamsundar (50 off 76) and Jack Jobson (91*off 130) put on 139 to secure the victory.
“To Gordon’s credit they worked hard to recover and post a competitive total,” said Clarke, who was eager to see his top order in action after Tuesday’s shortened fixture.
“Before the boys went out to bat we encouraged them to play their natural game and back their ability,” he said.
“And I thought Reehan and Jack did that. Jack’s innings was everything you want from a No.3, he played safe early and when comfortable, shifted through the gears and remained not out at the end.”
ALL BASES COVERED
Once again Lachlan Bartlett provided the golden touch for Northern District as the Rangers overpowered Hawkesbury by 137 runs at Bensons Lane.
Fresh from an opening round fifty and three-wicket haul, the opener top scored with 85 from 112 as captain Finn Bailey (78* off 65) and Zachary Haddin (61 off 94) added fuel to the fire in a score that roared to 4/290.
Far from done, Bartlett (4/29, 10 overs) returned with his leggies, ripping the heart out of the Hawks middle order. Hemish Arora top scored with 50, but it wasn’t enough in a final card of 153.
In another blowout, Fairfield-Liverpool all-rounder Paarth Sharma was prominent in the Lions’ crushing 129-run win over Sutherland at Rosedale Oval.
In a spell of 3/17, the Lions kingpin picked up the prized scalp of Lucas Sheehy (29 off 49) as the visitors folded for 100 in pursuit of 6/229. Earlier, Sharma top scored with 68 off 85, and the opener’s innings was complemented by Alexander Lauchlan’s unbeaten 58 off 83.
UTS North Sydney opened their account with a clinical eight-wicket win over Sydney. Vivaan Bhosale was the star, delivering a fine all-round effort that included 3/19 and a top score of 53 not out off 76 balls.
After Sydney were bowled out for 127, Bhosale and Kaviru Karunaratne (39* off 60) joined forces in an unbeaten stand of 103.
PATIENCE WINS THE RACE
While round two had its share of fireworks, it was more a case of slow and steady wins the race for Penrith and Randwick Petersham.
After deciding to bat at Waverley, Penrith openers Jacob Thompson (43 off 92) and Riley Killeen (32 off 62) bunkered down and laid the foundations for a 93-run win over Easts. In a final score of 7/227, the pair added 78 in 22 overs before Fred Ball (53 off 46) cashed in on their hard work.
Easts leggie Tyson Jansz took 4/33 from 10 overs, while Ekam Singh Bhambra grabbed 4/35 for Penrith.
It was a much closer affair at Coogee where the home side held off a determined Blacktown by two wickets with 26 balls to spare.
Set 155 for victory, opener Eamon Bonora (51 off 122) refused to surrender and was there when Randy Petes closed out consecutive victories.
REVIVAL CONTINUES
UNSW’s Green Shield revival continued with a three-wicket win over St George. Despite missing last season’s finals, the Bees won their finals two matches and are now chasing bigger goals following a 2-0 start.
Jaden Tsang (2/42) landed two early blows as Saints were bowled out in the 32nd over for 146. However, the chase wasn’t without its hiccups, but with Neel Patel’s 58 off 90, UNSW reached the target with 16 balls to spare.
