SUTHO OPEN ACCOUNT

After several near misses Sutherland are on the board after they upset UTS North Sydney by 27 runs at Sutherland Oval.

Batting first, the home side laid the foundations scoring 7/195 in an innings where skipper Lucas Sheehy (57 off 82) was the best of a top-four that all contributed scores of 30 runs or more.

Opener Jacob Hanlon (36 off 72) top scored in reply, but any chance Norths had of securing a third win vanished when Vivaan Bhosale (20 off 42) sliced off-spinner Archie Selmes (3/19, 10 overs) to Thomas Wood at cover to make it 6/100.

“There’s been improvement with every outing and I thought the boys deserved the win,” said Sutherland coach Jake Wilson.

“Lucas scored 48 in fourth grade on Saturday and once again led from the front today. And Archie didn’t bowl a bad ball, he’s among the leading wicket-takers in Green Shield and has been selected in the ACT under-17s squad for the upcoming nationals in Tasmania.”

With many in Wilson’s squad still young enough to go around next season, the coach is eager to see how they measure up against Northern District on Tuesday.

“The win is a huge boost to our confidence, especially against a strong side like North Sydney. NDs will be a good test, they’ve been the benchmark across the opening rounds.”

BACK FROM THE BRINK

With a backs to the wall victory over a strong Manly outfit, Sydney University have shown they’re a legitimate title contender.

Coming off a last round loss to UNSW, Uni stumbled to 4/42 before orchestrating a miraculous recovery to post a winning score of 9/241.

Thomas Walker (2/40) had his Manly teammates up and about when he landed the prized scalp of competition leading run scorer Archie O’Hara for one, and the paceman found solid support from William Graham (2/35) who broke through twice in his first spell.

With Uni staring down the barrel of consecutive defeats, Xavier Quoyle strode to the crease in the 12th over and returned to the pavilion 36 overs later as a hero. In a match-saving knock of 82 off 103, his 84-run stand with Monte Cairns (56 off 37) for the seventh wicket proved crucial in the side’s fourth victory.

Rocked by the onslaught, a jaded Manly could only muster 130 in response. Darcy Horstead’s (31 off 42) good form continued, but the innings was dominated by Arnav Yadav’s leg-spin.

In a touch over eight overs, the u17s state rep blew away the middle order with an impressive 4/17.

TOSS OF THE COIN

In a round laced with thrillers, Sydney proved the race to hoist this season’s Green Shield is as wide open as ever.

In a ripping encounter at Old Kings, Sydney jumped to fourth spot after captain Hamish Malone (4/24) bowled his side to an 11-run victory over Parramatta.

Earlier in the day Tom Medford (54 off 78) guided the visitors to a modest 176, but when Malone dismissed three of Parra’s top-six an upset looked assured.

At 8/122 and 55 shy of the target, the home side looked gone. However, lower order resistance from Aniket Tamhankar (18 off 21) and Benjamin Mani (11* off 12) ensured Sydney were made to sweat until the final wicket fell on 165 in the 42nd over.

In a contest switched to Balmoral Oval, UNSW made it five straight after holding off a gallant Penrith by three wickets with one over to spare.

Fred Bell (78 off 105) and Fletcher Byrne (32 off 52) were the best in Penrith’s 175. Although the Panthers didn’t look likely until Cooper Hegarty (2/22) removed Bees danger man Neel Patel for 51 off 73 and captain Sam Hayes for a well made 40 off 62.

Despite a middle order collapse, Fletcher Gersbach (9* off 25) and Stian Constable (2* off 4) held the lower order together to seal the result in the 49th over.

Randwick Petersham followed a similar script to edge out Easts by one-wicket with four balls to spare at Waverley.

Set 197 for victory, Randy Petes looked in control until opener Eknoor Deo (54 off 83) departed at 6/120. With rising leggie Tyson Jansz (4/31, 10 overs) weaving his magic, the Dolphins were poised to land their first scalp.

But despite being run out two runs shy of the victory target, Marcus D’Ambrosio (43 off 69) did enough for the visitors to move to ninth with a 3-2 record.

SHORT SHIFT

Unbeaten ladder leaders Northern District and St George both earned an earlier mark with comfortable victories in round five.

After blowing away Bankstown for 113 at Bankstown Oval, Lachlan Bartlett (57* off 62) and Zachary Haddin (50* off 54) – the son of former Aussie wicketkeeper Brad – guided the Rangers home without loss inside 20 overs.

It was a similar story at Harold Fraser Reserve where Ronan O’Neill (3/18, 10 overs) took the honours with the ball as Saints rolled the Ghosts for 90. In reply, St George raced to their third win one down in the 26th over. Opener Kynan Eagles top scored with 39 off 49.

UNDER THE RADAR

Mosman continue to surge after a slow start. Following back-to-back defeats to open their campaign, the Whales made it three straight after comfortably accounting for Blacktown by 100 runs at Allan Border Oval.

Hugh Taylor top scored with 45 in Mosman’s 206 all out. And with Alex Burke (3/23, eight overs) and Aidan Boulton (3/24, 10 overs) combining for six wickets, the Whales moved to eighth spot after rolling the visitors for 106.

Despite a five-wicket haul to Hawkesbury opening bowler Sameer Kukade (5/43, 10 overs), Gordon departed Bensons Lane with their second victory.

Asked to bat first, Gordon opener Satva Shah (64 off 95) and captain Vivaan Gandhi (51 off 59) added 85 for the second wicket before the Stags closed out their 50 overs on 9/233.

In a reduced contest, the Hawks closed shy of the target on 7/80 from 30 overs. Capping off a strong all-round performance Kukade top scored with an unbeaten 21, while Gandhi followed up his half century with 4/16 from seven overs.

In a low scoring contest at Blacktown International Sports Park, Wests snuck past Fairfield-Liverpool to secure their third victory with a one-run win.
