MANLY-WARRINGAH GO THREE FROM THREE

Manly-Warringah 2/88 def UTS North Sydney 86 at Manly Oval

The Manly-Warringah bowling unit have turned in a stellar performance at Manly Oval to remain undefeated in the 2021/22 AW Green Shield after restricting UTS North Sydney to just 86 runs.

A wicket-maiden to fast bowler Toby Laughton off the opening over was a sign of things to come, with the next three top-order wickets tumbling at a cost of only five runs.

Laughton and fellow opening quick Nathan Pryke shared the spoils with two wickets a piece before a determined UTS North Sydney captain Hamish Reynolds steadied the ship for his team.

Reynolds, who held his team together by posting scores of 43 and 66 in the first two rounds of the competition, ultimately fell for 29 after being trapped LBW by Roopmehar Dillon.

Without Reynolds, UTS North Sydney only added 31 more runs to the total with Dillon celebrating three further wickets to finish with match figures of 4/20.

Beau Kelley, making his first appearance for Manly-Warringah in this summer’s AW Green Shield, also took a wicket from his three over spell.

Manly-Warringah never looked like losing the match, with the only blip in the victory being two quick wickets when they were 25 runs away from victory.

Manly-Warringah’s topscorer was opening bat Jack Donnan with an unbeaten 32.

SUTHERLAND PUT ON BOWLING CLINIC

Eastern Suburbs 68 def by Sutherland 6/215 at Waverley Oval

A dominant performance with the ball has seen Sutherland celebrate their second victory of the AW Green Shield campaign, just two days after a one wicket loss to Manly-Warringah.

The team’s top wickettaker across the opening rounds Sam Niumataiwalu began a procession of wickets, trapping Eastern Suburbs opening bat in the 10th over.

A 92-run third wicket partnership between Lachlan Ritchie (73) and Jake St John (39) laid the foundation for a competitive 215 run total after 50 overs.

The pick of Eastern Suburbs bowlers was opening bowler Ashwin Rajeswaran, taking 2/29 in his AW Green Shield debut.

Eastern Suburbs remain winless after the first three matches.

FLETCHER HYDE CELEBRATES FOUR WICKET HAUL ON DEBUT

Penrith 5/159 def Fairfield-Liverpool 158 at Howell Oval

It’s never a bad day in the field when you restrict the opposition’s top five batters to less than 20 runs each, and that’s what Penrith did against Fairfield-Liverpool on Tuesday.

After losing the toss and being sent into the field, Penrith had to be patient until opening bowler Harveer Dhaliwal continued his run of good form and celebrated the wicket of opening bat Hashene Avinash Dahanayake in the sixth over.

Fairfield-Liverpool skipper Abhay Bhatt posed some resistance alongside Yash Deshmukh until the captain lost his wicket to Penrith’s Cooper McLean, leaving the score at 6/92.

In the 44th over the visitors were all out for 158.

Fairfield-Liverpool begun positively in the field with in-form opening bat Leo Astill run out after four balls and a second wicket having Penrith precariously placed at 2/15, however Angus Cornish guided his team home with an unbeaten 61 with 28 balls to spare.

Penrith remain undefeated after three matches while Fairfield-Liverpool are still looking for a way into the winner’s circle.

MOSMAN ENTERS THE WINNERS CIRCLE

Randwick-Petersham 6/211 def by Mosman 2/113 at Coogee Oval

After two losses in heartbreaking fashion, Mosman are celebrating their first win of the campaign thanks to a stellar captain’s knock by Will Adlam.

It only took two balls for Mosman to believe it could be their day with Joshua Malone dismissing Randwick-Petersham’s in-form opening bat Charlie Tink for a duck.

Fellow opening bowler William Nutt dismissed the no. 3 batter to have the home team struggling at 2/20, before a strong third wicket partnership between Jake Myers and Jack Gibbens-Johnson saw the momentum shift once more.

Adlam elected to bowl himself with the decision paying dividends with the breakthrough wicket of Gibbens-Johnson for 50 seeing Randwick-Petersham at 3/141, with Myers soon departing on 78.

With Mosman at the crease chasing Randwick-Petersham’s 217 run target, Gibbens-Johnson celebrated an early wicket with opening bat Jamison Veitch out for 4.

However, the celebrations were short-lived with Adlam arriving at the crease with the captain and Axel Bailey enjoying a 100 run second wicket partnership.

With Bailey out for 55, Adlam continued on to an unbeaten 85 as he guided his team home with 29 balls to spare.

CLINICAL BATTING BY NORTHERNERS LEADS TO WIN

Northern District 3/240 def Parramatta 182 at Storey Park

A clinical batting performance has seen Northern District defeat a previously unbeaten Parramatta in a highly-competitive clash at Storey Park.

Choosing to bat first at home, opening bat Jordan Netto made a strong start before a loose shot saw him out for 23.

From that point on, opening bat Riley McDowell (70) and Sam Weir (109*) took charge and guided their team to an imposing 240 run total.

Northern District opening quick Jaden Sequeira made his presence immediately felt, dismissing each opener for a single run between them with those wickets being his sixth and seventh of the AW Green Shield so far.

Wickets constantly fell for Parramatta who struggled to keep up with the required run rate, ultimately ending up all out for 182 in the final over of play.

St George 4/220 def Blacktown Mounties 9/216 at Hurstville Oval

RAZA STARS IN TOPSY-TURVY ROUND 2 CLASH

Blacktown Mounties 9/191 def Mosman 189

A topsy-turvy clash between two clubs desperate for an opening win has seen a stunning last-wicket partnership prove to be the difference, leaving Mosman supporters heartbroken for the second time in three days.

“It was two clubs that were in the game, out of the game and back in a million times over,” Blacktown coach Matt Mortimer surmised.

Mosman set a competitive total of 189, however it could have been far greater with a stunning mid-order collapse – led by five wickets to medium pacer Saim Raza – resulting in the team back in the sheds about seven overs early after losing seven wickets for close to 45 runs.

A confident Blacktown Mounties arrived at the crease at Joe McAleer Reserve but failed to take charge, ultimately landing in the unenviable position of 9/121 with 70 runs left on the board.

Not many would’ve suspected the batting talents looming deep in the order in no. 9 Raza and no. 11 Ajitesh Kamboj, but the two teenagers were proven performers. Kamboj had hit a century in early December in an under-15 representative match while Raza had smashed an unbeaten double-century in a junior club match last month.

The pair ultimately guided Blacktown Mounties to victory, with Raza hitting three sixes including one to win the match off a no-ball free hit.

“Our team legitimately bat all the way down but I wasn’t expecting … I knew they could win and had the skill and ability to win, but the way in which they went about it,” Mortimer said.

“Raza is a very, very good young player. He just got his eye in and waited and as soon as he connected with a good one he just attacked and put the pressure back on Mosman and backed himself.

“When the team won it was like they had won the lotto – it was lovely to see.”
