The state’s elite junior bowlers have showcased their talent at the prestigious AW Green Shield with the race heating up to be the competition’s leading wicket taker.

Northern District captain Riley Mackay enjoyed a day out in Thursday’s AW Green Shield match against UNSW, finishing with figures of 6/14.

The all-rounder, who took up leg spin bowling as a way to crack into junior representative teams, said a relaxed mindset from spending his holiday break at the beach has contributed to his nine wickets since the new year at an average of 5.5.

“I’m just getting back into the rhythm of things with my bowling,” he said. “I didn't bowl too well at the start (of the AW Green Shield competition) but I am just hitting a purple patch right about now.”

When asked what he believed had led to the purple patch, Mackay said an emphasis on bowling in the right areas and keeping the pressure on the batting team.

“Against UNSW, I put the ball in very consistent areas and made it hard for the batters to score runs,” he said. “It built up a lot of pressure and caused the six wickets I think.”

Mackay, who is in charge of the undefeated Northern District team, is the third leading wicket-taker in the competition with 12 wickets after six rounds.

Manly-Warringah captain Roop Dhillon is leading the list with 14 scalps, helped by an inspired effort against Penrith at Howell Oval in round 6 where he recorded his best figures of 4/9 from eight overs.

The talented all-rounder is averaging about 11 runs per wicket and has bowled nine maidens across the opening rounds.

Sydney opening quick Sid Harvey is second on the wickettakers list with the Narrabri teenager celebrating 13 wickets, including a dominant 4/20 in the opening round against Blacktown Mounties.
