NEWCASTLE MAITLAND REGION KNIGHTS

Captain: TBA

Coach: Andrew Jackson

Players to watch: Although the club expect several players to step up and perform well this season, versatile fullback/half Kyran Blair and backrower Fletcher O’Doherty, a Dudley and Souths junior, have been doing well during the pre-season. In fact, the pair have been training with the club’s Harold Matthews team (U17s), but will drop back to the Andrew Johns Cup squad for games.

Why they will be competitive: With the cream of the crop in terms of young local talent in the side, the squad has impressed during pre-season, with the Knights’ coaching staff focusing on upskilling the players and making sure the club’s systems, calls and style of play are ingrained into the squad.Like all teams at the U16 level, they are still raw, but the boys have reacted well to the coaching and have improved both their skills and match awareness over the pre-season.

Last season: 9th

Squad: Allan Middleton, Lochlan Clenton, Tom Brands, Jaylan Bishop, Kyran Blair, Jake Botfield, Matthew Mcewen, Ryan Lawrence, Cooper McKenzie, Jye Stone, Mitchell Blazer, Fletcher O’Doherty, Frank Purcell, Brandon Mundine, Dan Richardson, Roy Simpson, Bailey Haggerty, Liam Richards, Jace Cox, Taj Tolar, Jack Keenan, Callan Faulds, Brodie Dugeon

WESTERN RAMS

Captain: Jonah Moss

Coach: Kurt Hancock

Players to watch: “Jonah Moss from Narromine played in the Indigenous U16s side. He’s a lock or second row in that Cam Murray sort of style. He can play with the ball, rolls his sleeves up and gets through a lot of work. Jayden Innes from Orange will start at fullback and he’s shown a lot of ability so far. Rex Bassingthwaighte has done all the pre-season with the Panthers and came back to us. He’s a good kid with a bright future at fullback or centre.”

Surprise packet: “Matari Kelly is a hooker who is only slightly built, but he’s jumped out of the ground. He went away with the Indigenous Blues and came back a totally different kid. He has plenty of game sense, speed and a ripping attitude.”

Why they will be competitive: “They’re the most talented group we’ve had ability wise with the footy. Probably across the whole age group the footy is evolving. These young fellas are well skilled and have a great game sense. We just have to make sure we tidy our defence. It’s a promising group and they will be super competitive.”

Last season: 10th

Squad: Jace Baker, Rex Bassingthwaighte, Joe Edwards, Nate Green, Darby Haycock, Jayden Innes, Corey Kaltenbacher, Kapene Karaitiana, Tristan Keed, Matari Kelly, Ethan Madden, Jack Milne, Hunter Mooney, Jonah Moss, Tyreke Peckham, Ned Phillips, Haiden Porter, Tamaiti Puata, Noah, Sutcliffe, Hayden Whatman

CENTRAL COAST ROOSTERS

Captain: TBA

Coach: Jack Ellis

Players to watch: “Isaac Fotu-Moala is a very talented five-eighth, very talented who just plays what he sees in front of him. Jai Callaghan played fullback with NSWCHS last year and has shown a lot of promise. There’s a young man called Darcy Sinclair Smith who can play second row or lock and made the NSW team for the CCC. Riley Ilham studies at Knox Grammar and can play prop or lock as well. All four are contracted to the Roosters, that’s how highly regarded they are.”

Surprise packet: “Ryan Tukapua is small in stature at hooker, but his craft is very good and he punches well above his weight. He’s been going well and training and is coming along nicely.”

Why they will be competitive: “The boys just know how to play football, they can play form anywhere on the field and they’ve got strikepower from everywhere. They can play through the middle or can cut you up out wide. We’re very happy with this age group and big things are to be expected. The coach has previously won this. There’s a two-year plan for this age group, and we want to go deep in the finals. We’ve got to believe and want to challenge these young boys.”

Last season: 5th

Squad: Tayte Bailey, Sam Flakus, Blake Field, Tali Kolofale, Koby Jones, Isaac Fotu-Moala, Brock Elliott, Riley Ilham, Ryan Tukapua, Billy Worsley, Jaxson Watene, Kaleb Bourke, Darcy Smith, Jai Callaghan, Kye Nowlan, Jack Pettit, Lachlan Gatt, Zac Stokes, Lincoln Hansen, Nashawn Papali’i, Brock Mangan, Jarvis Macarthur

ILLAWARRA SOUTH COAST DRAGONS

Captain: TBA

Coach: Jason Hooper

Players to watch: Axel Antony is an exceptionally fit lock forward who doesn’t stop working. A leader, both on the park and in training. Good leg speed, agility, feet, and happy to take those tough carries when his team needs him. Beau Baldock is a big bodied five-eighth who is also a great leader for the boys on and off the park. Very useful kicking game which is important for this side.

Surprise packet: Jack Talbott has come down from the Harold Matthews team for the 2023 season. A quiet kid but lethal and fast on the park, with coach Hooper backing him to be the X-factor for the side. An AFL background has given him a great kicking game and confidence under the high ball.

Why they will be competitive: Hooper admits his side were a bit shell-shocked at the size of their Manly opponents in their first trial game. That being said they performed very well defensively and believes that shock is now out of the system. Having made cuts to their side they’ve been training well. They’re a pretty small team physically, but are determined to play smart and skilful footy to counteract this, and have their target of a top three finish in mind for this season.

NORTHERN RIVERS TITANS

Captain: TBA

Coach: James Harrison

Players to watch: The Titans have some quality players in their outside backs. The likes of Beau Hartmann, Sione Tonga, Koopah Walters and Elliott Farrell look set to be exciting players and will all be dangerous if the opposition give them any space. Meanwhile in the forward pack, Sonny Kilduff is one to watch, a front rower who enjoys the grunt stuff but also has the great ability to mix his game up. Antwone Quinlan-Randall is set to be another key player after recently being selected for the NSW U16s Koori team.

Surprise packet: Ashley Watts could be the surprise find of the Titans’ 2023 campaign. He was a standout at the selection trials and has kept this standing throughout pre-season training. Ashley plays in the front row, is as fit as anyone in the squad, and thrives on involvement.

Why will they be competitive: On paper, the Titans squad looks very strong and have some good performers in key positions. The key for the squad will be seeing how they adapt to this level of competition and ensuring they play to their potential.

Last season: Premiers

Squad: Antwone Quinlan-Randall, Ashley Watts, Banjara Porch, Beau Hartmann, Cooper Armfield-Stevens, Cruz Dangerfield, Dylan Butcher, Elliott Farrell, Jakequan Roberts Welsh, Jed Mulcahy, Jimmy McCombie, Jonah Verus, Kaleb Smith, Koopah Walters, Kwinn Wolf, Kyron Nipperess, Luke Barnett, Nathaniel Kapeen, Noah Vakararawa, Owen Woods, Riley Loughland, Ryan Harris, Sione Tonga, Sonny Kilduff, William Wright, Zane Farrell

NORTHERN TIGERS

Captain: Dustin Wyrzykowski

Coach: Cody Tickle

Players to watch: “Reece Josephson from Cobar and Darcy Wallace are two outside backs that are pretty threatening. They’re boys that train pretty hard and they’ve got their minds set on going on to bigger and better things. Both boys are natural fullbacks so they will chop and change a bit at this stage, so we haven’t settled on the one, but the other will play in the outside backs or halves.”

Surprise packet: “Dustin Wyrzykowski is a hardworking back rower who does everything right and sets an example for the team. He’s someone that really leads by example. He comes from Bathurst and studies at Farrar.”

Why they will be competitive: “We’re a hardworking team that isn’t afraid of the gritty stuff, but we also have a bit of flair on the end of it as well. We’ve been coming together quite nicely considering how big the region is. Travelling is a big thing for us, but we’ve trained well for the past few months and the boys have really been hooking in when they’ve had the chance.”

RIVERINA BULLS

Captain: TBA

Coach: Seb Cottam

Players to watch: “Front rower Arthur Smith is a big boy with a big engine and it will be interesting to see how he goes against some higher quality opposition. He’s been training the house down and has a good attitude. Bailey Piper can play at hooker, lock or in the halves. He’s pretty versatile and is just a natural footy player.”

Surprise packet: “Nic Bett didn’t make the Group side, but I saw something in him in the trial. He came into a bigger squad and we wanted to see how he went. He’s earned a spot from nowhere. He has a big body, is versatile and works hard. He’s a back rower, centre or wing and stands at about 6’3’.”

Why they will be competitive: “This level of rep footy is always the unknown. They haven’t played much against each other or other teams so it’s hard to know what we’re up against. We’ve got the team together and they want to play for each other. I’ve done it for a few years and they’re definitely one of the teams that has really clicked. I think we can go a long way and hopefully they’ll continue on to the U18s.”

Last season: 8th

Squad: Will Benson, Nic Bett, Bodhi Brady, Riley Butcher, Nic Canellis, Joey Charles, Abdul Conteh, Drew Edwards, Kyson Freer, Archie Gay, Hardy Glover, Oliver Hall, Jack Harris, Thomas Lyons, Mason Mescia, Ata Misi, Xavier Peihopa-Smith, Bailey Piper, Byron Price, Preston Schultz, Arthur Smith, Cooper Tuilakeba, Jack Walsh, Jai Willoughby

MONARO COLTS

Captain: Jamie Cowling

Coach: Shane McCallum

Players to watch: Jamie Cowling is a halfback from Goulburn who has risen up the ranks at Monaro Colts. Excellent passing and kicking game, but also offers a lot defensively, not shying away from tackling the bigger boys. Has been training very well and a lot of great things are expected of him this season. Hooker Koby Anderson is a big difference maker in a pivotal position for the Colts. A skilful dummy half who knows how to pick the right option nine times out of ten. Can also sniff out a try from close range.

Surprise package Pat Koen. Hailing from Yass, the big front rower could be the difference maker this year. A young talent who’s still a bit raw, but is willing to learn and with a bit of coaching has the ceiling to be a top player.

Why they will be competitive: A sixth placed finish last year has them optimistic about their chances of improving this season. A lot of the players are currently training weekly with the Harold Matthews Cup Canberra Raiders side, which is an excellent experience for the young players and a chance to adapt their game to a higher standard. The coaches are hopeful the players that return to the Colts will bring with them a higher standard of footy.

Last season: 6th

Squad: Hayden Nye, Jet Millard Samuel Green, Jonah Alaia, Patrick Kennedy, Jamie Cowling Troy Codey, Daniel Moananu, Koby Anderson, Billy Hollands, Lochie Ellard, Kobe Field, Thomas Handsaker, Malachi Tomlinson, Cooper Adams, Patrick Koen, Joshua Klobucar, Thomas Moss, Blake Slater, Levi Woods, Luke Palmer, Tyrell Bartlett, Angus Durbidge, Ryan Douglas, Shannon Tardrew, Cooper Johnston, Zildjian Tafili, Demsey Woolf

MACARTHUR WESTS TIGERS

Captain: PJ French

Coach: Alec Bush

Players to watch: Fullback Aaron Paea has trialled a bit as a five-eighth but looks to have cemented the fullback spot as his own. Great running game, very quick off the mark. Not a lot of size but he backs himself and his ability and is able to lead his team from the back

At six foot plus you can’t miss front rower PJ French. He leads the line not only physically, but is a leader within the team as well, with all the boys respecting and following what he says. He has good line speed, he’s strong, mobile and as tough as they come.

Surprise packet: Coach Bush has been very happy with second rower Will Jenkins in the trials, and is showing real potential to grow into a pivotal role for the squad. Now it’s about making sure he is consistent. Paul Johnston is a big, powerful winger who makes a lot of damaging runs. Still young and with a lot to learn, but with time can become unstoppable.

Why they will be competitive: It’s a first year with this squad for coach Bush but so far he has been really impressed with the talent and effort on display. It’s been a tough pre-season but all the boys have put in the hard yards and are determined to avenge their grand final defeat last season, which is ultimately the club’s goal for the year.

Last season: 3rd (beaten grand finalists)

Squad: Kwan Ah-Hoe, Lamontae Banderson, James Bengura, Elahlio Atoni, Lorima Cosgrave, Deacon Davis, Stirling Faumui, Christopher Filikitonga, PJ French, Glassie Glassie, Riley Ingersole, Will Jenkins, Paul Johnson, Jake Jones, Isaac S Lafi Leulu, Dwayne Lyons, Malcolm Mailo, Sam-Paul Mauga, Lucas Muir, Jack O’Hara, Isaac Orji, Aaron Paea, Aaron Prodromou, Ilaisa (Sonny) Raravula, Hunter Redman, Henare Reti, Preston Smallwood, Brody Taateo, Jerome Taateo, Tomasi Tavui, Tyler Volcov, Hayden Young

NEWCASTLE MAITLAND REGION KNIGHTS

Captain: TBC

Coach: Jye Hill

Players to watch: Outside backs Zeek Falkner and Cody Hancock are dangerous players with plenty of potential to hurt the opposition. The pair, who have been training with the Knights’ SG Ball side, could be key strike weapons if given too much time and space.

Why they will be competitive: Made up mainly local juniors, the squad has been working hard at training to implement effective defensive structures, and will be hard to beat if they muscle up without the ball. As an U18 competition, the Laurie Daley Cup is also a breeding ground for SG Ball and other senior pathways teams, so with the stakes raised the club is hoping the players step up and perform this season.

Last season: 5th

Squad: Callan Barber, Daniel Ward, Elias Kennedy, Ethan Quinn, Fletcher Thompson, George Beagon, Jacob Marshall, Jett Hassell-Robards, Joe Green, Joel Connell, Jordan Hill, Jordan Wilson, Kade Fabri, Kynan Butler, Mason Forbes, Taimana Elers, Tully Wolhert, Tyreece Gordan, Ty-James Davis-Dates, Zeek Faulkner, Charles Hennessy, Cody Hancock

WESTERN RAMS

Captain: Connor Vardanega

Coach: Shane Rodney

Players to watch: “Connor Vardanega is in the Penrith system and is an up and coming back rower. He leads by example with everything he does. His tacking, communicating and work ethic is great. Kaydden Hoad has a bit of class about him at halfback. He’s a good game manager with a good kicking game and is a threat with the ball. Five-eighth Fletcher Hunt is really calm on the field, but his communication has been his biggest thing. He guides the team around the park, is always upbeat and energetic.”

Why they will be competitive: “We haven’t had success in this age over the last couple of years. It’s a tough challenge bringing the group together because it is so spread out. If we can get them to compete for the whole game, there are some talented players in there who can mix it with the strong regions. I think we will be competitive. It’s up to the boys to believe that and be willing to hang in there with teams to the back end of games. If we do that, we’ll have some success.”

Last season: 6th

Squad: Will Black, Braith Boyd, Michael Coady, Kelly Constable, Bailey Davis, Malaki Folau, Toby Gibson, Kaydden Hoad, Tully Howell, Fletcher Hunt, Ajay Isbester-Boss, Harry Kukla, Nick Oresic, Jodan Porter, Dane Richards, Jake Roberts, Angus Thompson, Connor Vardanega, Harry Wald, Ethan Young

CENTRAL COAST ROOSTERS

Captain: TBA

Coach: Paul Franz

Players to watch: “Fullback/five-eighth Riley Bourke is a very talented young man who is very fleet footed and knows his way to the try line. Zac Gillett is a hooker in the mould of Geoff Toovey. He’s a great defender, tenacious ad competes on every play. James Miller has been captain the last few years. We really missed him last year. He’s a big worker who gets through a lot as a lock/prop, and captained the Country team a few years ago.”

Surprise packet: “Zack Visconti is a no-nonsense prop forward with a big work rate, is aggressive with his carries and is coming on in leaps and bounds. He’ll be pushing for SG Ball very soon, and if the opportunity arises, he may take that.”

Why they will be competitive: “We won the Johns Cup a couple of years ago and lost a lot of close games last year. Suspension and injury hindered us, but we didn’t have the depth to ride the waves. The aim is for these boys to progress again and in some way defend what they won two years ago. I believe they’re up there with the teams to beat.”

Last season: 2nd (Eliminated Finals Wk 1)

Squad: Connor Watson, Noah Owens, Tyreece Arama, Zac Karam, Andrew Wisham, Riley Burke, Josh Farmilo, Zack Visconti, Zac Gillett, Riley Watson-Miletic, Dylan Coyte, Jackson Pennell, James Miller, Xavier Taurerewa-Yucei, Jarrod Dann, Will Hodder, Aymn Hamilton, Brock Taylor, Travis Barnes, Travis Northey, Tyrone Dorrell, Lachlan Loadsman, Declan Hicks, Kieran Diamond, Jack Legge

ILLAWARRA SOUTH COAST DRAGONS

Captain: TBA

Coach: Peter Hooper

Players to watch: Talu Tausala in the front row is a very talented big man who plays the game with a smile on his face. A tough front rower, who broke his thumb in the side’s trial game against Manly but continued to play the rest of the match, and even score a breakaway try from the halfway line in the same game. Jackson Rieck is an exceptional talent at the fullback position. Lightning on his feet, very agile, one to really enjoy watching.

Surprise package: Jarrah Treweek brings a tall frame and a big skill set for a second rower. A bit shy, having not played in representatives before, but very committed to the squad, travelling over an hour from Ulladulla to get to training. Not afraid however to demand the ball on the park, with Hooper keen to see what kind of footballer he can develop into this season.

Why they will be competitive: With the skill on show in pre-season, coach Hooper is confident his team can be competitive. The boys have been working hard over the Summer break on their conditioning. Hooper believes there is a good team environment with no big egos, they’ve had a great pre-season campaign and are looking to ride that momentum into the cup.

Last season: Premiers

NORTHERN RIVERS TITANS

Captain: TBA

Coach: Brad Purtell

Players to watch: All pre-season the coaching staff have been emphasising the importance of each individual’s effort, enthusiasm and commitment to the team, and the Titans are building a culture where everyone plays an important role. However, one to keep an eye on is Zane Harrison, who was a member of the recent Junior Blues squad and is an outstanding prospect in the halves. Not only is he a smart half that manages a game well, he is one of the toughest in the squad – he never gives up on a play. Brady Turner and Taylor Withington will lead the charge in what is a youthful forward pack, both having experienced local first grade in 2022.

Surprise packet: Callum Bowles’ shift from five-eighth to centre has looked like it has suited him well in the pre-season. He is a tall, strong centre that is equally effective on both sides of the field.

Why will they be competitive: Although the Titans are a younger side, with 10 members from last year’s Andrew Johns Cup-winning team in the squad, it is a team that has good balance. If their forward pack can play to its potential, then there is plenty of class and speed throughout their spine and outside backs to cause opponents plenty of trouble.

Last season: 7th

Squad: Aaron Singh-Goesel, Anthony Hickling, Ayden Byrnes, Billy Kilduff, Bo Peisley, Brady Turner, Callum Bowles, Cameron Bevan, Clayton Guiney, Connor Smith, Creedence Kelly Donovan, Isaac Harrison, Jed Arnett, Jesse Soric, Kye Cooper, Lachlan Offley, Levi Dangerfield, Luca Todd, Noah Waldock, Reshawn Brown, Riley Baharov, Riley Buchanan, Stevie O’Connor, Taylor Withington, William Bates, Zane Harrison

NORTHERN TIGERS

Captain: Logan Spinks, Callum Dowell (vice)

Coach: Darryl Rando

Players to watch: “Logan Spinks is signed up with the Bulldogs now and has been going really well. We’re expecting a big tournament from him. He can play second row or front row, is versatile, and is a talented player that can run a good line. Dylan Keane is a year young but played in an U18s grand final last year and starred for the Scone Thoroughbreds. Cooper Meldrum is another player that has really impressed and he’ll go well out in the centres.”

Surprise packet: “We’ve had some good training runs and another trial game to come against the Knights. A number of boys have impressed and this will give us more of an idea as to who will come up to that next level.”

Why they will be competitive: “The way we went about our first trial, we want to improve on that each week. We scored six tries to two. If they can improve on that both individually and in their team performance, we will keep going ahead and it gives us a good opportunity to play semis. There’s new faces and we’re gelling better than I thought. It will take a couple of games, but we want to make sure we’re moving forward.”

RIVERINA BULLS

Captain: TBA

Coach: Matt Pike

Players to watch: “Fijian talent Beniel Dakunibubului plays in the middle predominantly as a front rower and is coming off a Harold Matts campaign with Canberra. Noah Killeen is a lock who can play in the second row and was also in that Canberra side. Sam Graziani is a fullback who was in the initial Raiders SG Ball squad. He’s not too far away from playing there. He’s a good organiser and talker.”

Surprise packet: “McKinley Hamblin is also a middle who has come in nice and fit with a good attitude. He looks like he belongs. He didn’t play in the U16s, but has been very impressive this pre-season.”

Why they will be competitive: “They’re a good, hard working group of blokes who are getting on well. It’s really positive about how they’ve trained, they’re buying in and the improvement they’ve made since the U16s is incredible. There’s a core of about eight or nine that have been together and that makes a big difference with some pieces that complement them. A couple of year youngers have been lost to the Raiders, but they’ll be okay.”

Last season: 9th

Squad: Cohen Benson, Matt Chant, Malachi Charles, Angus Clarke, Lachlan Cole, Noah Dal Molin, Beniel Dakunibubului, Lachlan Field, Sam Graziani, McKinley Hamblin, Joseph Hill, Noah Killeen, Blake McDonald, Jared McKinnon, Malakai Morris, Braydon O’Reilly, Nic Powderly, Seb Rodet, Koko Salim, Chaise Sergi, Max Warr, Mitchell White, Angus Williams, Eli Williams

MONARO COLTS

Captain: Max Mercer

Coach: Brendan Bradley

Players to watch: Second rower Max Mercer brings a lot of great energy and chat to the team. A good edge player, a strong ball carrier great at running at the line, and defensively really sound. Hooker Xavier Caccioti is a strong defensive player but great with the footy as well. Good footy intelligence and just an all rounder on the field.

Surprise packet: Front rower Jayden Svager is good young kid with plenty of talent. Standing at 6’2’ and over 100kg, he’s had plenty of junior first grade experience, and Bradley hopes this is the year he realises his potential and becomes the difference maker for the side.

Why they will be competitive: It’s Bradley’s first year coaching the Laurie Daley Cup side having come from the Andrew Johns Cup, and he’s hopeful his fresh approach will help the team realise its potential to compete at the highest level. Coming off a disappointing eighth place finish last year, Bradley recognises the tough competition ahead but is confident his team can hold their own.

MACARTHUR WESTS TIGERS

Captain: Zac Gibson

Coach: Tom Morrison

Players to watch: Half Zac Gibson is a pivotal player of the squad now in his second year of the Laurie Daley Cup. Initially started as a hooker but moved to the halves and has adapted well. A small and stocky build but fast and illusive in his movement. Also very sound defensively with excellent tackle technique, not shying away from the bigger blokes.

Lock Luke Prebble is the kind of player most teams would want. A bit raw still at a young age, but with a massive engine, he gets very busy on the field, putting in a high defensive workrate. Tough as nails, getting involved in all the dirty work.

Surprise packet: Fullback Cooper Mangan is a naturally fast player which is a nightmare for defences. Still has a lot of learning to do when it comes to his positional play, both in supporting the attack and sweeping in defence, but has a lot of potential and natural ability which could be massive for the Tigers this year.

Why they will be competitive: Coming off a fourth placed ladder finish last season, Macarthur Wests Tigers always have their eyes on the top. Coach Morrison admits there’s a hole that still needs developing in the middle of the park where they’ve lost some forwards this year, but also thinks the side has improved in their outside backs and spine from last season. They’re fit and willing and are getting themselves into good knick as a unit.

Last season: 4th (Eliminated Finals Wk 1)

Squad: Junior Borg-Taveuveu, Ryan Campbell, Harry Delaney, Joseph Eccleston, Brayden Faiai, John Finianos, James Folaumoetu’i, Zac Gibson, Kye Jones, Likari Leota, Cooper Mangan, Noah McKenzie, Sylvester Neil, Kalasini Papalii, Ryan Polsen, Luke Prebble, Harley Rebbeck, Bowen Roper, Jone Rorocolo, Livai Saukuru, Ielly Smith, Liam Starr, William Stimson, Isaac Sykes, Lawdez Taurerewayucel, Seth To’o, Gene Wighton, Ewan Xuereb
